The 1993 vintage was not an easy one for Bordeaux, and yet Château Pétrus once again proves why it is one of the greatest wines in the world. The cool, wet spring and rainy August presented many producers with enormous challenges. At Pétrus, however, thanks to strict sorting and the exceptional location of the vineyard on the Pomerol plateau, it was possible to produce a remarkable wine.

The 1993 Pétrus shows a deep, garnet-red colour with clear brownish reflections on the rim - an unmistakable sign of maturity. A complex, restrained but fine aroma unfolds on the nose: ripe plum, dried cherry and truffle mingle with leathery, tobacco-like notes. These are joined by subtle hints of cedar wood, liquorice and a hint of dried rose petals. The fruit is no longer primary, but blends seamlessly into the spicy tertiary flavours.

On the palate, the wine is elegant and medium-bodied - not a powerhouse as in great vintages, but with a silky texture and impressive finesse. The tannins are completely melted, the acidity lively and integrated. The concentration is surprisingly good for the difficult vintage, but without reaching the power of a 1990 or 1989. The finish is long, warm and accompanied by a fine bitter note reminiscent of fine dark chocolate.

Overall, the 1993 Pétrus is a wine of maturity and pleasure. It does not stand for eternity, but for the present, almost delicate enjoyment of a fully developed top Pomerol. If you are lucky enough to open a bottle in good storage, you should decant it to separate the fine sediments and then serve it at around 16 to 18 degrees. A wine for connoisseurs who favour elegance and complexity over sheer power.
