Château Pétrus, Pomerol 1992

The 1992 vintage was extremely difficult for Bordeaux: cool, wet weather throughout the growing season led to diluted, acid-emphasised wines with low alcohol and tannin content. Many producers struggled with rot and unripe grapes. Château Pétrus on its clay plateau benefited from better drainage, but even here there were challenges. The result is an unusually light, early-ripening Pétrus, which is considered one of the weakest vintages of the house.

The 1992 Pétrus shows a pale ruby red colour in the glass, which has already lightened considerably, with broad brick and orange tones on the rim - a clear sign of advanced ageing. The nose is delicate but not without charm: notes of dried cherries, cranberries and ripe plums meet subtle earthy accents such as damp leaves, mushrooms and a hint of leather. The fruit is rather stewed and light, lacking depth and concentration. Spicy nuances of dried herbs and some tobacco linger, but without the complexity of great vintages.

On the palate, the wine is surprisingly soft, but also clearly thin. The tannins are completely melted away, almost non-existent. The acidity is still noticeable, but appears somewhat inharmonious, as it is offset by sufficient fruit body. The concentration is unusually low for a Pétrus - the wine quickly collapses on the palate. The texture is nevertheless silky, but lacks structure. The finish is short to medium-long, warm, accompanied by a slight bitter note and a hint of caramel. Overall, the wine lacks the depth expected from this prestigious château.

Château Pétrus 1992 is a wine that has clearly passed its peak and is only suitable for immediate consumption. It is proof that even the best terroir cannot fully compensate for a difficult vintage. For collectors, it is primarily of historical interest; for connoisseurs, other vintages offer far more. Recommendation: Decant briefly (30 minutes), serving temperature 16 °C. A light, almost fragile Pétrus - more of a curiosity than a great wine.
