Château Pétrus, Pomerol 1988

The 1988 vintage in Bordeaux was characterised by classic austerity: A wet spring was followed by a dry, warm summer with significant temperature differences between day and night. Ripening was slow and even, resulting in wines with high acidity, firm tannins and a remarkable freshness. Château Pétrus managed to make the most of these conditions on its clay plateau - the 1988 is not an opulent, but an austere, architectural Pétrus of great longevity.

In the glass, the colour is a deep, still surprisingly youthful ruby red with the first, delicate brick reflections on the rim - a sign of slow, controlled maturation. The nose is initially reserved and needs time to open up. It then unfolds a complex bouquet: cool wild berries such as blackberry and blueberry, accompanied by subtle earthy notes (truffle, forest floor). This is joined by classic tertiary flavours: tobacco, leather, cedar wood and a hint of mint. The fruit is not sweet, but rather tart and elegant, with a subtle mineral coolness reminiscent of chalk and damp stone.

On the palate, the 1988 Pétrus is taut, precise and almost Burgundian in finesse. The tannins are firm, dense, but of the best quality - they are still clearly perceptible, but finely grained and well integrated. The acidity is lively and gives the wine an impressive freshness and tension. Compared to more opulent vintages such as 1989 or 1990, the 1988 appears leaner, but by no means thin - its concentration is considerable, but hides behind the tight structure. The texture is silky, but with bite. The finish is long, cool and characterised by a fine bitter note and an aftertaste of liquorice and dark chocolate.

Overall, Château Pétrus 1988 is a wine for the patient and the connoisseur. It has reached its drinking window, but will keep for at least another decade due to its firm tannins and high acidity. It is not an immediately accessible, fruit-orientated wine, but one that needs plenty of air and respect. Recommendation: Decant for at least two to three hours, serving temperature 16-18 °C. A classic, almost austere Pétrus of great elegance - a wine of structure and depth, not pure richness.
