The 1983 vintage in Bordeaux is often described as heterogeneous - while very good, long-lived wines were produced in the Médoc, the right bank, especially Pomerol, showed a somewhat different development. Château Pétrus, however, also utilised its exceptional terroir this year to produce a wine of great elegance and remarkable maturity.
Today, the 1983 Pétrus presents itself in a deep but lighter ruby red colour with clear brick and amber reflections on the rim - a clear sign of a fully developed, mature wine. The bouquet is complex and seductive: notes of ripe plum, blackberry jam and dried figs dominate at first. This is followed by subtle earthy tones such as truffle, damp forest floor and leather. There are also spicy nuances of cinnamon, cloves and a fine smokiness, with a hint of coffee and chocolate rounding off the mature aroma spectrum.
On the palate, the 1983 is surprisingly velvety and smooth. The tannins are fully integrated, almost imperceptible, but give the wine a fine but present structure. The fruit is still lively, although the primary flavours have shifted towards dried fruit and stewed fruit. The acidity is soft but balanced - it carries the wine and gives it freshness on the finish. Compared to great vintages such as 1982 or 1990, the 1983 is less concentrated and powerful, but has an inimitable finesse and mellowness. The finish is medium to long, warm and characterised by a pleasant, elegant bitterness.
Overall, Château Pétrus 1983 is a wine that has reached its peak and is now in a perfect drinking window. It is no longer a wine for eternity, but one for immediate, sensual enjoyment, ideal for lovers of mature Bordeaux who appreciate elegance, complexity and tertiary flavours. Serving temperature: 16-18 °C, half an hour of decanting is enough to open up the fully developed bouquet. A noble, round Pomerol that masters the challenge of the vintage with class.
