Château Palmer 1986
Introduction
Château Palmer is one of the most renowned estates in the Margaux appellation and ,despite its official classification as a Troisième Cru Classé,enjoys a reputation that is in no way inferior to that of a Second Growth. The 1986 vintage occupies a unique position: it is often overshadowed by the immediately preceding 1985 vintage, yet is regarded by connoisseurs as a wine with its own distinct character and remarkable substance.
1986 Vintage – Climatic Conditions
The 1986 wine year in Bordeaux was characterised by an exceptionally long and warm summer, which extended into September. These weather conditions preserved the acidity of the grapes and allowed for unhindered phenolic ripening – an ideal prerequisite for structure and longevity. However, severe storms in September caused concern. Whilst the rainfall on the Right Bank mainly diluted the earlier-ripening diluted the Merlot, dry northerly winds were able to save the thick-skinned Cabernet Sauvignon grapes on the left bank. The result was a vintage renowned for its powerful tannins, immense concentration and exceptional ageing potential.
Blend composition
The 1986 Château Palmer consists of the following blend:
| Grape variety | Proportion |
|---|---|
| Merlot | 48 % |
| Cabernet Sauvignon | 41% |
| Petit Verdot | 7 % |
| Cabernet Franc | 4 % |
The harvest took placefrom 2 to 16 October. The alcohol content is 13% vol.
Tasting notes
Appearance
The wine displays an impressive dark ruby to purplish-red colour, with a slight lightening at the rim.
Nose
The bouquet is initially reserved and closed, but unfolds a complex array of aromas after aeration. Notes of cedar, sandalwood and cigar box emerge , accompanied by black fruits, cassis, truffle, violets and tobacco. Some tasters also detect cherry and dark chocolate/mocha.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, well-balanced and has fine yet firm tannins. Compared to the 1985 vintage, it is more austere, severe and reserved. The fruit is fully ripe and rich, but is overlaid by a layer of high tannins. The finish is precise, long-lasting and characterised by a tobacco-like, masculine note.
Critics’ reviews at a glance
Drinking maturity and serving recommendation
The 1986 Château Palmer has now reachedits peak and should remain at this level for around another decade. Neal Martin most recently (August 2023) indicated a drinking window from 2022 to 2032.
Serving temperature: 15.5 °C (approx. 60 °F)
Recommended food pairings: The wine pairs superbly with beef, veal, pork and lamb, as well as with game, duck, grilled dishes, hearty fish dishes (such as tuna), mushroom dishes and pasta.
Aeration recommendation: For younger vintages, 2–4 hours’ decanting is usual; for this mature wine, a brief decanting is generally sufficient to remove the sediment.

Conclusion
The 1986 Château Palmer is a wine with two sides: for some , it is a austere, tannic classic that tests the connoisseur’s patience. For others, it is an elegant Margaux with style and class. Many critics rank it behind the more accessible and floral 1985 vintage, but it offers greater structure, concentration and a more masculine character.
Anyone who appreciates classic, reserved Bordeaux wines with firm tannins and good ageing potential will enjoy this wine – provided they have the necessary patience and allow the wine sufficient time to breathe. The 1986 Palmer is not an instant seducer, but a wine with depth, pedigree and character.
