- Michael Broadbent: 5***** (11-2000) Sweet, full, rich, with perfect fruit and balance. Lovely now, many beautiful years ahead
Parker : 95/100 While not as powerful and concentrated as the 1986, 1983, or 1982, the 1985 Margaux is more charming and, at present, more complex than those more backward vintages. The colour is a healthy dark ruby/purple. The seductive nose offers copious quantities of lavishly ripe black berry and cassis fruit intermixed with toasty oak and floral scents. This rich, expansive, and velvety-textured wine has developed more length, and additional flavour dimensions over the last several years. It has always been a remarkably approachable and enjoyable wine, but it appears to be taking on more character and quality than I ever imagined. It is one of the most delicious and seductively opulent Margauxs of the last two decades. I consistently underestimated this wine when young. It gets better every time I re-taste it, which happens with increasing frequency Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book (3)
Margaux is now ready to drink, but still has potential for 15-20 years. It was a late starter for 1985. At the 1994 Margaux tasting in Mautern, it was still very reserved. It was also hesitant to open up at the '85 tasting in 1999 and still showed some biting tannins. At the end of 2000, finally a more open bottle, very beautifully matured, dense Margaux with a great nose, berry fruit and the typical, infinite elegance - 94/100. Finally, at the end of 2005, an incredibly charming, delicately scented, elegant wine with very fine, berry fruit. Accessible and with great length on the palate. However, this is not a sample wine, as it goes down in comparison to power wines. This is the kind of wine you drink solo, in front of the fire in the evening or on a rainy Saturday afternoon. A wine for dreaming and philosophising, which stimulates instead of numbing the palate - 93/100. Last drunk in 2007 on a Braui Best Bottle in a perfect magnum. Crazy colour, so young, fantastic nose with wonderful fruit, lots of red berry fruit on the palate, cedar wood, perfect combination of power and finesse. Smell it again and again, let it swirl on the palate, swallow and dream. Margaux as an appellation and as a chateau like from the textbook, delicately scented, elegant, but at the same time powerful, how nice that there was plenty of this perfect exceptional magnum in the glass - 97/100 (source: wineterminator.com Dr. Becker)
