Domaine Charles Noellat Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 1937 - The forgotten masterpiece of Burgundy

Domain: Charles Noellat (today parcelled out to Domaine Leroy and Roumier)
Site: Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru (Vosne-Romanée) - ##########_0__ ha owned at the time
Vintage drama: Extremely dry summer, early harvest under heat stress - grapes with concentrated juice, but tiny quantity.

Production myth

  • Hand-picked at the end of September 1937 (last pre-war harvest on the estate).

  • Spontaneous fermentation in open wooden vats without temperature control.

  • Matured for 18 months in used oak barrels (no new wood).

  • Production: Max. 300 bottles (magnums extremely rare).

Sensory legacy

Last documented tasting (Michael Broadbent, 1991):

*"Deep mahogany colour with orange edge. Bouquet of dried roses, truffles, deerskin and old cedar wood. A revelation on the palate: floating tannins, wild cherry fruit, smoke and sous-bois spice. Finishes for 60+ seconds - like a kiss goodbye to old Burgundy. "*
Alcohol: ~12.5% | Acidity: 6.2 g/L (amazingly fresh)

Historic explosiveness

  • Fateful vintage: Last complete Noellat vintage before the parcelling out in 1943 (Vichy regime forced the division).

  • Cult status among connoisseurs: Henri Jayer described it as "Burgundy's lost soul".

The science behind its longevity

Natural preservation:

  • High tannins due to stem fermentation + low pH value (3.4).
Minimal use of SO₂: Only 25 mg/L (today 150+).
Cellar secret: Constant 11°C at a depth of 8m (damp limestone cellar).

"The 37 drank like a requiem - full of beauty and melancholy. You could taste the end of an era."
- Clive Coates MW, 1989

Heritage & influence

  • Terroir reference: Leroy used Noellat's parcel maps for her RSV cuvées (from 1988).
