Tasting note: Burmester Colheita 1940

Appearance:
An elegant, deep mahogany colour with golden reflections on the rim, testifying to decades of ageing. The viscous texture reveals itself in gentle, slow tears in the glass. Clear and radiant, typical of a carefully aged Colheita.

Nose:
A complex bouquet that immediately entices with dried figs, dates and candied oranges. Underneath, nuanced notes of walnut, roasted almonds and a pinch of cinnamon unfold. Fine caramel and vanilla tones, refined by a subtle smokiness and aged oak, round off the flavour.

Palate:
On the palate, there is a perfect balance between sweet honey, toffee and lively, fresh acidity. Smooth and silky flavours of marzipan, candied plums and a hint of dark chocolate play around the tongue. The tannins are almost completely integrated, the alcohol (approx. 20%) remains discreet and harmonious.

Finish:
A long, warm finish with lingering nuances of nutty caramel, clove and a mineral elegance. The final spiciness is reminiscent of fine tobacco and emphasises the timeless complexity.

Overall impression:
An exceptional Colheita that masterfully embodies Burmester's craftsmanship and patience. The 1940 vintage is a historic jewel that impresses with its depth and balance. Despite its age, it appears vital and shows why ageing Tawnys are among the great wine wonders.

Serving suggestion:
At 12-14 °C as a meditative digestif or paired with blue cheese, dark chocolate or nut desserts. A wine that also offers a journey through time on its own.

Ageing potential:
Already in its prime, but thanks to its freshness will keep for years - provided the bottle is stored in a cool, dark place. A piece of living history in a glass.

Note: The rarity and vintage make this port a special experience that fascinates wine connoisseurs and historians alike. 🍷
