Bischöfliches Konvikt – Eitelsbacher Marienholz Riesling Spätlese dry 1983: A treasure from the Ruwer Valley

The 1983 Eitelsbacher Marienholz Riesling Spätlese dry from the Episcopal Seminary in Trier is an outstanding testament to the rich tradition of viticulture at the Episcopal Estates of Trier. The Episcopal Seminary, founded in 1840, is one of the three partners in the consortium formed in 1966, which also includes the Episcopal Seminary (founded in 1773) and the Hohe Domkirche (founded in 1851) . Today, the winery cultivates around 37 hectares of vineyards, including prime sites on the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer, with Riesling being the dominant grape variety .

The Eitelsbacher Marienholzvineyard is situated in the Eitelsbach district of Trier in the Ruwer Valley and covers a total area of around 20 hectares, which is cultivated by the Episcopal Vineyards . The south-west to west-facing slopes consist of relatively deep red slate loam with a layer of clay, which provides good water retention . The weathered slate soil, often mentioned in descriptions of this vineyard, lends the Riesling grapes grown here their characteristic mineral vibrancy and elegant spiciness . Cultivation takes place on steep slopes, which require labour-intensive manual work .

The 1983 vintage is now a sought-after rarity. The ‘Spätlese’ style in its dry version gives the wine a powerful, structured character with a firm acid framework. Tasting notes for comparable wines from the Marienholz vineyard describe a rich golden-yellow colour, a very dense nose of lime blossom honey, candied peach and petrol, and a pronounced acidity with ripe fruit and an elegant slate minerality on the palate . Wines from this vineyard are praised in the literature for their ability to demonstrate impressive performance and remarkable longevity, even in vintages not classified as excellent .

For lovers of great German Rieslings ,this Eitelsbacher Marienholzoffers a rare opportunity to experience an authentic piece of Ruwer Riesling history and to savour the exceptional quality of a winery that, like almost no other, epitomises the tradition and excellence of German viticulture.
