Bischöfliches Konvikt – Ayler Kupp Dry Riesling 1982: A Saar Riesling from a variable vintage

The Ayler Kupp Dry Riesling 1982 from the Episcopal Seminary in Trier is an authentic testament to the long-standing wine-growing tradition of the Episcopal Estates of Trier. The Episcopal Seminary, founded in 1840, is one of the three partners in the consortium formed in 1966, which also includes the Episcopal Seminary (founded in 1773) and the High Cathedral Church (founded in 1851) . Today, the Episcopal Vineyards cultivate around 120 hectares of vineyards in prime locations on the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer, with Riesling being the dominant grape variety, accounting for around 88 to 90 per cent .

The Ayler Kuppvineyard is one of the most historically significant and renowned sites on the Saar . The steep south to south-west facing slope, with gradients of 30 to 60 per cent, consists of blue-grey Devonian slate, which lends the wines their characteristic mineral tension, firm structure and refined density . The Bischöfliche Weingüter cultivate a total of 10.2 hectares in this VDP-classified ‘Große Lage’ . The wines from Ayler Kupp were already in high demand as early as 1850 and, by the end of the 19th century, were fetching prices comparable to those of Burgundy .

However ,the 1982 vintage was an unpredictable one on the Moselle and Saar. Contemporary reports point to difficult harvesting conditions with heavy rain in October, which influenced the character of the wines . Nevertheless, a dry Riesling from this vintage, matured for almost half a century, displays a fascinating spectrum of aromas characterised by the typical Tertiary slate aromas of the Saar – smoky, mineral notes combine with a lively, harmoniously integrated acidity . The dry style lends the wine a robust, structured character.

For lovers of great German Rieslings ,this Ayler Kuppoffers a rare opportunity to experience an authentic piece of Saar Riesling history and to savour the exceptional quality of a winery that, like almost no other, embodies the tradition and excellence of German viticulture.
