Bischöfliches Konvikt – Ayler Herrenberger Riesling dry 1986: A testament to the Saar tradition
The 1986 Ayler Herrenberger Riesling (dry) from the Bischöfliches Konvikt in Trier is an authentic testament to the rich winemaking heritage of the Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier. The Episcopal Seminary, whose roots date back to 1840, is one of the three partners in the consortium formed in 1966, which also includes the Episcopal Seminary (founded in 1773) and the High Cathedral Church (founded in 1851) . Today, the Episcopal Vineyards cultivate around 120 hectares of vineyards in prime locations along the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer, with Riesling being the dominant grape variety, accounting for around 88 to 90 per cent .
The Ayler Herrenbergervineyard is a sub-plot within the famous Ayler Kupp vineyard, whose historical significance was already highlighted as early as 1897 . The Bishop’s Vineyards cultivate 4.6 hectares there . The steep south to south-west facing slopes, with gradients of 20 to 60 per cent, consist of grey-blue weathered clay-shale soil with a high rock content . This geological feature lends the Riesling grapes grown here their characteristic firm structure, pronounced acidity and refined density .
The 1986 vintage is now a sought-after rarity. The wines of this era were still produced at a time when ageing in large 1,000-litre oak barrels was the norm. A dry Riesling from this vineyard, matured for almost half a century, displays a complex spectrum of aromas characterised by the typical Tertiary slate aromas of the Saar – mineral and smoky notes combine with a lively, harmoniously integrated acidity. The dry style of vinification lends the wine a robust, structured character.
For lovers of great German Rieslings ,this Ayler Herrenbergeroffers a rare opportunity to experience an authentic piece of Saar Riesling history and to savour the exceptional quality of a winery that, like few others, embodies the tradition and excellence of German viticulture.
