The A. Christmann Königsbacher Idig Riesling Großes Gewächs 2008 is an impressive example of the Palatinate’s finest wines and a prime example of the art of dry Riesling. The A. Christmann winery, now in the hands of the seventh generation of the Christmann family, is based in Gimmeldingen and ranks amongst the most renowned estates in the Palatinate. The wine comes from the VDP.GROSSEN LAGE® Idig in Königsbach, one of the Palatinate’s most outstanding terroirs, whose wines are undoubtedly counted amongst the region’s true Grand Crus.

The Idig terroir is characterised by calcareous soils, which lend the wine its characteristic minerality and depth. The 2008 vintage, renowned in the Palatinate for its clear structure and lively acidity, yielded grapes of the highest quality. The harvest at Idig was carried out entirely by hand, followed by careful selection and gentle pressing. A six-hour cold maceration extracted the primary fruit aromas before the must underwent spontaneous fermentation in large 1,200-litre oak barrels and was subsequently aged in wood for ten months. With an alcohol content of 13% vol., this Riesling is a powerful yet elegant wine.

On the nose, the Idig GG 2008 displays a complex bouquet: it reveals aromas of ginger, peach and ripe apricots, underpinned by subtle mineral notes and delicate hints of petrol. On the palate, the wine captivates with its pleasantly mineral texture and a slightly oily consistency, which lends it a distinctive richness. The moderate yet pronounced acidity ensures a lively structure and freshness, whilst the aromas of apricot and peach tart round off the flavour. The finish is characterised by impressive length and concentration.

The reviews for this wine reflect its high quality. Wine Enthusiast described it as concentrated, with a slight viscosity on the palate and a long finish – a solid example of its class. User ratings on Vivino even rank this vintage amongst the top 1 per cent of all wines in the world, underlining its exceptional calibre. The wine is recommended as a gastronomic accompaniment to white meat, veal, crab soup and smoked fish. Thanks to its structure and body, this Riesling has great ageing potential and already offers an exceptional tasting experience for lovers of complex, terroir-driven white wines.
