Château Cheval Blanc 1978 - A complex vintage of superlatives
Château Cheval Blanc, located in the heart of Saint-Émilion, enjoys a reputation for producing one of the most exceptional wines in the world. Its terroir - a mosaic of gravel, sand and blue clay - combined with an early microclimate provides the perfect basis for its characteristic grape varieties. The vineyard extends over 39 hectares and is divided into 55 individual plots, each of which is cultivated separately.
The 1978 vintage was an important one for the estate. After a difficult, rainy summer until mid-August, a warm and sunny late season saved the vintage and led to a harvest that produced a cooler style and remarkable freshness. Historically, 1978 was an exceptional success for the château, producing a wine of great finesse, but with widely divergent opinions.
Vinification and cuvée
The cuvée of the 1978 Cheval Blanc reflects the typical identity of the house: a blend traditionally composed of around 60% Cabernet Franc and around 40% Merlot, with a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc gives the wine its aromatic complexity with notes of herbs, spices and violets, while the Merlot provides richness and soft tannins. The winery's annual production averages around 100,000 bottles.
Tasting notes and critical reviews
Reviews of Château Cheval Blanc 1978 are extremely varied - from critics who describe it as difficult and green to those who praise it as an underrated and great wine. This discrepancy is often explained by the considerable differences in quality, which in such an old bottle depend on the condition of the bottle in question.
Robert Parker (The Wine Advocate): This is where the difference of opinion is most evident. In an earlier review, he awarded only 87 points, describing the wine as a rather green, herbaceous style with medium body, firm texture and a lack of charm and fruit. Later, in 2022, however, he revised his rating to 93 pointsand praised the depth of the bouquet with aromas of smoke, dark berries, black truffle and mint as well as the velvety, lively texture of the wine.
Other critics:
Vinous (Antonio Galloni): The Cheval Blanc 1978 is "simply superb" and shows an exotic nose characterised by spices and tobacco. It is still bright, refreshing and characterised by Cabernet Franc, which makes it a "real pleasure". Galloni awarded 94 points.
Rene Gabriel: The Swiss critic awarded the wine 16/20 pointsand described a nose of green peppers, a palate that was still young and characterised by a slightly dominant acidity, and noted a high Cabernet Franc character.
Summarising tasting notes:
In the glass, the wine is a medium to dark garnet red with a brightening brick rim. The bouquet is complex: it combines earthy notes of forest floor (sous-bois) and leather with tobacco, green pepper, mint and a fine spiciness. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with a present, crisp acidity that gives the wine a surprising vitality despite its age. The tannins are melted and provide a velvety finish. The wine hasexcellent length and persistence.
Drinking window and ageing potential
The Cheval Blanc 1978 is now fully mature and should be savoured over the next few years.
Drinking maturity: Most sources recommend drinking the wine now or consuming it over the next few years. Some notes emphasise that it can keep for a few more years.
Drinking window: Robert Parker gave a drinking window of 1998 to 2028 for well-aged bottles , while Antonio Galloni from Vinous suggests a window of 2016 to 2026.
Bottling and storage:As this is a mature wine, the fill level (e.g. Top Shoulder, High Shoulder) is decisive for the quality. Bottles with a low fill level (very top shoulder) indicate greater evaporation and possibly lower quality. The wine should be stored in a cool, dark wine cellar with constant temperature and humidity.
Prices and availability
The 1978 Cheval Blanc is a rarity and is mainly traded at auctions or with specialised wine merchants.

Price examples:

Lobenbergs von Privat: Bottle at a price of €390.00 (top shoulder, medium label and capsule damage).
Christie's Auction (2025): Two bottles for an estimated HK$4,000 - HK$5,000 (around €475 - €590 per bottle).

Conclusion
The Château Cheval Blanc 1978is an exceptional, but also controversial wine. It is certainly not a typical Cheval, but rather a "wine for connoisseurs", with a rather cool style characterised by Cabernet Franc. Its great appeal lies in its liveliness and freshness, which one would not expect from a wine of this age.
It is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts due to its rarity and its potential to offer a great experience in good condition. However, the widely divergent reviews emphasise how important the provenance and condition of an individual bottle are to the final taste experience. Anyone looking for this wine should do so with the necessary caution and ensure that the provenance has been tested.
