🍾 Dom Pérignon 1982 Rosé - Report
Historical background and the 1982 vintage
Champagne Dom Pérignon is Moët & Chandon's most prestigious luxury cuvée and is only produced in exceptional vintages. The 1982 vintage is considered legendary: it produced ripe, concentrated grapes with an ideal balance between acidity and body. This rosé was created by Dominique Foulon, the Chef de Cave at the time, who is known for his masterful style.
Vinification and cuvée composition
Grape varieties: 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, with the latter partly vinified as a red wine.
Style: Unlike many rosé champagnes, this one gets its colour and depth from the addition of red still wine, which gives it an unusual intensity and complexity.
Tasting notes
The champagne displays a dark, orange-toned pink colourwhen stored correctly and surprises with an unusually ripe, almost meaty nose - "meaty and animally", reminiscent of mature Pinot Noir.
Ripe flavours include:
Wild strawberries, dried cherries, guava
Mocha, nutmeg, spices
Cedar wood, smoke, dried roses
A hint of truffle and marzipan (Burgundy influence)
On the palate, the 1982 vintage is full-bodied, almost sweetly ripe, with an impressive fullness, a bright, orange-like acidity and a long, spicy finish. It is both gentle and dynamic and continues to develop in the bottle.
Ratings and drinking window
Professional ratings:
Drinking maturity:The peak was seen between 2010 and 2025. Antonio Galloni recommends not to store any further, as no additional profit is to be expected.
Market prices and availability
Prices at auction are high due to the high demand and extremely small production run:
750 ml standard bottle: approx. €900 - €1,400, depending on condition and origin.
Magnum bottle (1.5 litre): €1,375 - €2,000+.
Pack of six (6 bottles): Estimated prices from HK$32,000 - HK$45,000 (approx. €3,800 - €5,400).
Oenothèque / P3 (Late Release): This extremely rare late release from the cellar of the house often costs over €3,000 per bottle.
Note:When buying, make absolutely sure that the storage is documented (original age, good appearance, label). If stored poorly, the champagne may have already degraded.
Matching dishes
Serena Sutcliffe, MW, recommends this rich champagne with "pink roastlambchops". It is an excellent accompaniment to roast poultry, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheese (Comté). Due to its intensity, it is also an exclusive accompaniment to Asian cuisine (e.g. Peking duck).
Conclusion
Dom Pérignon Rosé 1982 is a living legend of Champagne. It combines the sumptuous maturity of the vintage with the craftsmanship of Dom Pérignon to create a sensual, almost fleshy taste experience that goes much deeper than most sparkling wines. For connoisseurs and collectors, it is not just a drink, but a work of art and a testimony to an extraordinary era of champagne. Anyone who finds a bottle in good condition should celebrate the moment it is opened - this champagne is at the height of its powers.
