Product information

This is a report on the extremely rare Dr Heidemanns-Bergweiler (Zach. Prüm Erben) Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1976 based on available search results.

1. Winemaker and origin

The wine comes from the Dr Heidemanns-Bergweilerwinery , which is owned by the Zach. Prüm Erben is . The winery is based in Bernkastel-Wehlen on the Moselle.

The grapes were grown in the single vineyard Graacher Himmelreich. This site near Graach on the Moselle is one of the most renowned vineyards in the world . The soil consists of weathered clay slate with a high clay content, which gives the wines an inviting fruit and depth . The site is known for its often cool, fresh minerality, which provides an important balance to the sweetness in noble sweet wines.

2. Predicate level: Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA)

This wine is a Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA), the highest Prädikat level in German wine law.

For a TBA, only berries that are completely affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), ripe and dried are individually selected by hand . This results in extremely high must weights (sugar content) and a very concentrated flavour. TBAs are among the greatest rarities in viticulture, as they are only produced in very good vintages due to the high labour input and low harvest quantities.

3. 1976 vintage

The 1976 vintage is considered exceptional on the Moselle. The summer was extremely hot and dry, which led to very ripe, powerful grapes with a high sugar content. Wine Spectator rated the 1976 vintage for German Riesling with an outstanding 96 points and described the wines as "ripe, powerful with lots of botrytis" (noble rot) . This weather profile was ideal for the production of Trockenbeerenauslese wines.

4. Current market values and condition

Due to its rarity and age, this bottle is traded almost exclusively at auctions or in specialised shops. Current values are in the high three-digit euro range.

  • Dr. Heidemanns Bergweiler (Zach. Prüm Erben): A price of € 575.00was quoted for the 0.7-litre bottle for the variant with gold capsule ("gold capsule" often indicates a particularly selected filling within the TBA quality) (as of 2026) .

  • S.A. Prüm (related winery): A similar bottle from 1976 from the same vineyard was valued at an auction in 2021 at an estimated value of $300.

  • Joh. Jos. Prüm (renowned neighbour): A competing winery, also owned by the Graacher Himmelreich site, achieved prices of € 713.00for its 1976 TBA with gold capsule . This shows the high price level of this category.

5. Flavour forecast and drinking maturity

After almost 50 years of ageing in the bottle, this wine has reached its peak, but is probably still in a very good drinking condition due to its high sugar content and acid structure.

  • Colour: Deep golden yellow to amber .

  • Aroma: Complex nose of honey, dried apricots, prunes, caramel and clear notes of noble rot (botrytis) . There are also typical ripe Riesling flavours such as peach and a spicy minerality.

  • Palate: Due to the TBA quality, the wine is sweet and concentrated, but should have sufficient residual acidity to prevent it from appearing lumpy. Descriptions range from "rich and sweet" to a "long, lingering finish" .

To summarise, this wine is a top-class rarity for collectors. The 1976 vintage provided perfect conditions for a TBA, and the Graacher Himmelreich vineyard is synonymous with quality. Anyone who owns a bottle in good condition (fill level, capsule) can enjoy a piece of German wine history.
