Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin - Brut (Yellow Label)

A report

Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin is one of the most famous and traditional houses in Champagne. Founded in 1772, it was above all the widow (Veuve) Barbe-Nicole Clicquot who had a decisive influence on the history of the house at the beginning of the 19th century. Among other things, she developed the shaking process still used today and created one of the first commercially successful cuvées, the "Yellow Label", which still forms the backbone of production today.

The Veuve Clicquot Brut described here, widely known as "Yellow Label", is not a vintage champagne, but an assemblage from several harvest years. The cuvée is predominantly based on Pinot Noir, which gives the house its characteristic structure and presence, supplemented by Pinot Meunier for richness and Chardonnay for elegance and freshness. The proportion of reserve wines - traditionally high, often between 30 and 40 per cent - ensures stylistic consistency and complexity over the years.

In the bottle, this champagne is a bright golden yellow colour with fine, persistent bubbles. The mousse is lively yet smooth, which is typical of the House's art of blending.

The bouquet opens with a clear fruity note: initially fresh apples, pears and citrus fruits, underpinned by ripe yellow fruits such as peach and apricot. With a little aeration, the typical nuances of Pinot Noir-dominated cuvées emerge - light toasted flavours of brioche, a fine almond note and a hint of vanilla, which comes from the partial ageing in wood. The flavour is clear, direct and complex at the same time.

On the palate, Veuve Clicquot Brut has a firm but round texture. The attack is fresh, characterised by citrus and green apple, followed by a juicy fullness of fruit. The acidity is present but well integrated, giving the champagne a long, slightly mineral finish. The typical structure due to the high proportion of Pinot is reflected in a firm but not hard tannin backbone, which gives the wine its well-known presence. The finish has notes of biscuit and a subtle spiciness.

With its clear focus on accessibility and consistency of style, this champagne is a versatile companion. It is usually served at a temperature of 8 to 10 degrees Celsius and is ideal as an aperitif. However, due to its structure and freshness, it also harmonises with a variety of dishes: classically with oysters, fried fish or seafood, but also with poultry, white meat and mild cheeses. It can also be paired with Asian dishes or sushi, as the champagne has sufficient acidity and freshness without overpowering the flavours.

As the world's best-selling champagne house, Veuve Clicquot's Yellow Label embodies a style that stands for uncompromising blending, high quality across the vintages and an unmistakable signature. The cuvée is not a champagne for decades of cellar ageing, but is designed to be drunk in its optimum balance within a few years of its launch - an expression of the modern art of champagne with a firm foundation in tradition.

Conclusion: Veuve Clicquot Brut is a benchmark among non-vintage champagnes. It combines fruit, structure and a subtle woody note to create a rounded, characterful overall picture. Anyone looking for a reliable, complex and at the same time accessible champagne will find here one of the world's most style-defining representatives of its class.
