Trianon de Saint Ferdinand - Vieil Armagnac Vintage 1933 (40 % vol.)
The Trianon de Saint Ferdinand is a rare, barely documented bottling of old vintage Armagnac. The designation "Vieil Armagnac" emphasises its great age, while the vintage year 1933 refers to one of the classic vintages of the 20th century. With an alcohol content of 40 % vol., this brandy is at the lower end of the typical cask strength, which could indicate long, slow oxidation in the cask and deliberate dilution before bottling - or a natural reduction in alcohol due to decades of storage in wooden barrels. The origin "Trianon de Saint Ferdinand" presumably alludes to a château or domain in the Bas-Armagnac region, named after St Ferdinand, possibly with a historical reference to Trianon (Versailles) - an indication of an ennobled origin.
Appearance:
The 1933 shows a deep brown-golden to mahogany colour in the glass, with a broad, olive-coloured rim. Light reflections create amber and copper-red shades. The liquid is crystal clear, no cloudiness, but a viscous, slightly oily movement on the glass wall - typical of very old, concentrated spirits.
Nose:
The aroma is breathtakingly complex and extremely elegant, with notes of dried fruit dominating at first: Dates, figs, plum jam and sultanas. Behind this, decades of cask influences unfold: the finest rancio - a mixture of old leather, tobacco leaves, cedar wood and walnut shells. Caramel, toffee, coffee, a hint of dark chocolate and cinnamon complete the picture. Unlike younger Armagnacs, there is almost no sharp alcohol note; instead a warm, gentle hint of blackberry spirit, dried violets and a hint of oak butter.
Palate:
On the palate, the Vintage 1933 is soft, round and melting, with an oily texture. The 40% alcohol is perfectly integrated, enveloping the tongue without any burning sensation. The attack is sweet, but not cheesy - more like a very old Banyuls or Malaga: sultana honey, cooked plums, orange peel jam. Then comes the complex depth: rancio notes of rancid nuts (hazelnut, macadamia), old oak extract, liquorice and a hint of turpentine. The acidity is minimal, but still noticeable enough to provide structure. The finish is pleasantly rounded off by a fine bitterness from the wood (bitter chocolate, grapefruit zest).
Finish:
The finish is exceptionally long, warm and persistent. Flavours of candied citrus fruits, old port wine, walnut oil and spicy oak linger in the throat for minutes. A light, pleasant impression of noble mould notes ("caveau") is reminiscent of the decades of ageing in the damp, dimly lit barrel cellar.
Conclusion:
The Trianon de Saint Ferdinand - Vieil Armagnac Vintage 1933 is a jewel of the art of distillation from an era when Armagnac was still matured for generations without commercial pressure. 1933 was an outstanding vintage in south-west France, and the spirit distilled from it shows no weakness after more than 90 years of barrel ageing, but rather a sublime, almost meditative complexity. Bottles like this only appear in dusty private cellars or as one-off auctions. Every sip is a journey back in time to before the Second World War - an Armagnac for lovers of rancio, patience and authentic craftsmanship. Enjoy neat, at room temperature in a tulip or balloon glass.
