Terre del Barolo - Barolo Riserva 1964
1. The winery: Terre del Barolo
Terre del Barolo is a historic winegrowers' cooperative in the heart of Piedmont, more precisely in Castiglione Falletto. It was founded on 8 December 1958 by the committed teacher and mayor Arnaldo Rivera together with 22 winegrowers from the region . Its creation was a direct response to the difficult economic conditions suffered by local winegrowers, who were often forced to sell their grapes for minimal profit. The foundation can be seen as an act of self-help that secured the livelihood of many winegrowers.
Today, the cooperative is an association of around 300 to 400 winegrowing families, who together cultivatearound 650 hectares of vineyards . These areas extend across all eleven municipalities of the Barolo growing region, which offers the cooperative an immense variety of terroirs and locations. The winegrowers are mostly second- or third-generation small businesses that know every single vine in their vineyards. Terre del Barolo is committed to tradition and produces exclusively typical wines of the Langhe, prioritising biodiversity and the preservation of the unique winegrowing heritage.
2. The 1964 vintage in Barolo
The 1964 vintage is considered a truly "classic" and historic vintage for the entire Barolo region. It produced wines of exceptional balance, profound structure and beguiling aromas. It was a vintage that perfectly captured the essence of traditional Nebbiolo.
The resulting Baroli were characterised by remarkable longevity, and even after decades, the best bottles from this vintage are still a fascinating experience. Due to the outstanding quality of the vintage, the 1964 Barolois highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs, as evidenced by the numerous auctions and offers for this wine.
3. Vinification and ageing of the 1964 Barolo Riserva
This special Riserva was vinified using traditional methods typical of a classic Barolo from this era:
Grapes: the wine is made from the indigenous Nebbiolo grape variety , which is considered the basis for Italy's greatest wines.
Mash fermentation: After manual harvesting, the grapes were destemmed and crushed. Alcoholic fermentation took place at controlled temperatures of 28-30°C on the skins (mash), which enabled optimal extraction of colour, aromas and tannins. The maceration time was traditionally between 10 and 20 days.
Ageing: After malolactic fermentation, the wine matured for a prescribed minimum period of five years, at least three of which were in wooden barrels. Specifically, the 1964 Barolo Riserva was aged for a variable period in large Slovenian oak barrels (Slavonian Oak). These traditional large wooden barrels (botti) lend the wine subtle oxidative notes without overpowering it with strong oak flavours.
Alcohol content and classification: The wine reached an alcohol content of around 14% by volume and carries the highest Italian quality level DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita).
4. Current condition and maturity for consumption
After more than 60 years of ageing in the bottle, the 1964 Barolo Riserva has reached its absolute peak. The community tasting notes from CellarTracker paint a detailed picture:
Drinking maturity: the wine is now considered "fully mature" and should be enjoyed in the short term ("Drink Now"). A few bottles may have already passed their peak, but this depends heavily on the individual storage conditions.
Serving temperature and decanting: The ideal serving temperature is around 16°C.A long decanting time of at least four to five hours is essential. This is the key to experiencing the wine at its best: several tasters report that the wine improves enormously after this time, gaining body and strength. A short decant is not enough for a wine of this age.
5. Sensory description (tasting notes)
The aroma and flavour of this historic wine are characterised by impressive complexity and typical tertiary aromas:
Colour (eye): The robe is an intense garnet red with clear orange reflections, a sure sign of exceptionally mature age. The colour is slightly deep and still shows some red at the core, while the edges are already brick-coloured.
Nose (odour): The nose is elegant and reveals an enormous spectrum of aromas. Classic Barolo notes such as tar and roses are dominant . There are also diverse notes of vanilla, tobacco, fine smoke and balsamic notes, leather, dried red fruits, undergrowth, as well as elegant notes of violets and small red fruits. Some tasters also perceived aromas of menthol, liquorice and even meat broth or smoked meat. With a little aeration, pleasant notes of baked cherry can emerge.
Palate (flavour): On the palate, the wine is structured, harmonious and powerful. The tannins are now fully integrated and soft, the acidity is still correct and lively, giving the wine a remarkable freshness. The flavour profile is dominated by earthy, savoury and spicy notes as well as hints of ripe, dried fruit. Despite its age, the wine can show a surprising fruit intensity and vibrancy. The finish is persistent and complex (long aftertaste). The overall picture is that of a great, old Barolo in the traditional style, with a lot of "old school" character.
6. Historical significance and value
The 1964 Cantina Terre del Barolo Barolo Riserva (Speciale) is not just a wine, but a living document of its time, bearing witness to the rise of a winegrowers' cooperative that was able to combine the work of hundreds of families and create a wine of international standing. For collectors, an intact bottle of this vintage is an indispensable collector's item that represents a key moment in the history of modern Barolo.
The external appearance of the bottles naturally varies. While some bottles are in almost flawless condition ("into neck" level), others show signs of age-related wear, such as slight label damage or creases. The fill level is often described as "normal" or "upper shoulder". The cork is often partially saturated. The wine is rich in natural sediment, which is completely normal for old bottles.
The 1964 Barolo is still present on the market, both via specialised dealers and at wine auctions (e.g. via iDealwine, Whisky.Auction, Lot-Art). Offers are available as individual bottles or as cases (e.g. 12-bottle format). The price varies greatly depending on the condition, provenance and trading platform.
7. Gastronomic recommendations
To complete the flavour experience of this exceptional wine, we recommend equally powerful and traditional Piedmontese cuisine:
Pasta dishes with mushroom or cheese sauces
Meat dishes: Red meat dishes, game dishes such as braised meat and stews that harmonise with the complexity of the wine are ideal.
Cheese: Matured hard cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino.
Truffle: A luxurious but perfect accompaniment is a dish with white truffle from Alba.
Summary
An exceptional, rare and highly complex wine, the 1964 Barolo Riserva from Terre del Barolo is a living testimony to the history of winegrowing in Piedmont and the success of the co-operative idea. For the patient connoisseur who is prepared to decant the wine long enough, a still lively, structured and aromatically impressive wine with a great "old school" character is revealed, which carries the essence of a legendary vintage.
