Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial Millésime 1971

The 1971 vintage is one of the most remarkable harvests of the 20th century in Champagne. The House of Moët & Chandon, whose history dates back to 1743, declared this vintage Millésime due to the exceptional weather conditions and the resulting grape quality - a step that is only taken in the best years.

The weather in 1971 was characterised by a mild spring with no late frosts, followed by a warm but not too hot summer. The decisive phase of grape ripening in August and September brought ideal conditions with sunny days and cool nights, which led to slow, even sugar storage while maintaining the acid structure. The harvest took place under almost perfect conditions.

The Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial Millésime 1971 was blended from a classic cuvée of the three main Champagne grape varieties: Approximately one third Chardonnay from the Côtes des Blancs for elegance and freshness, one third Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims for structure and body and one third Pinot Meunier from the Marne Valley for richness and fruitiness. The exact recipe was subject to the art of the Chef de Caves, who vinified the respective parcels separately.

After the first fermentation and blending, the second fermentation took place in the bottle. The ageing on the lees lasted considerably longer than for a non-vintage champagne - at least five to six years was usual for a Millésime of this era. Only then was the vintage disgorged and given a very low dosage (liqueur d'expédition), which labelled it as "Brut".

After more than five decades of ageing in dark, cool cellars, this champagne presents itself in an exceptional state of maturity. The colour has changed from a pale gold to an intense amber gold with light brownish reflections. The perlage is now fine but restrained - typical of a fully matured, matured champagne.

A complex, tertiary aroma unfolds on the nose, dominated by notes of dried fruit such as apricot, fig and date, followed by marzipan, honey and candied citrus fruit. These are joined by fine nuances of brioche, roasted almonds, caramel and a hint of mushroom or truffle - signs of autolytic maturation. Fresh fruit flavours are only present as a slight reminiscence.

On the palate, the 1971 shows an impressive structure. The initial acidity has softened over the decades, but still ensures a lively, long-lasting finish. The carbon dioxide is gently integrated, the body is full but supple. The flavours of the bouquet are reflected on the palate, complemented by a light minerality and a nutty finish. The balance between maturity, residual extract and acidity is remarkably harmonious in well-preserved examples.

Connoisseurs describe this champagne as a monument to its time - a drink that no longer has the youthful freshness of a current brut, but instead has the depth, complexity and elegance that only decades of bottle ageing can provide. It is a champagne for meditation, which goes just as well with mature hard cheeses such as Comté or fine mushroom dishes as it does with a classic poularde à la crème.

The availability of Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial Millésime 1971 is extremely limited today. It only appears at auctions or in large collections. For lovers of matured champagnes, it is considered one of the great vintages of the house from the time before the modern, fresher style. An intact example offers a rare taste experience that impressively demonstrates the transience and at the same time the art of preservation of Champagne.
