Product information

Here is a detailed review of the Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge Vin de Pays de l'Hérault 2024, based on the latest available information.

🍷 The winery: The "Grand Cru" of the Midi

The Mas de Daumas Gassac is a true pioneer winery in the Languedoc. The story began when geography professor Henri Enjalbert recognised the unique terroir of the Gassac Valley and convinced founders Aimé and Véronique Guibert to plant vineyards there. Even before the Languedoc appellations were created, the estate showed that the region could produce far more than simple mass-produced wines.

Today, the winery is run by the four Guibert brothers and enjoys cult status worldwide. The renowned wine guide Gault et Millau once described the red wines as the "Château Lafite of the Languedoc", a description that emphasises the exceptional potential of these wines.

🌱 Terroir & philosophy: a microcosm of biodiversity

The terroir is at the heart of the winery. The vineyards cover around 50 hectares and are divided into over 70 small plots.

  • Soil: The speciality is the red, glacial gravel soil (Grèzes glacées), which is extremely deep and lends a remarkable mineral finesse.

  • Location: Nestled in a 4,000-hectare wooded area, the vines benefit from a particularly sheltered microclimate with large temperature differences between day and night, which is crucial for the development of freshness and aromatic complexity.

  • Biodiversity: The surrounding maquis (garrigue) - with its herbs such as thyme and juniper - significantly characterises the aroma of the wines. The winery works with the utmost respect for nature, which is confirmed by the organic certification of the wine.

🍇 The wine in detail: grape varieties, vinification & ageing

The Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge 2024 is an exceptional cuvée that reflects the unmistakable family recipe. Vinification is carried out in the traditional Bordeaux style with long fermentation and temperature-controlled maceration. The wine is aged for 12 to 15 months in French oak barrels, of which around a seventh is renewed each year.

  • Grape varieties: The cuvée is dominatedby Cabernet Sauvignon (approx. 80%). What makes it special is the addition of around 20 other varieties, some of which are very exotic. The varieties documented for the 2024 vintage give an impression of the complexity:

    • Main grape varieties (in addition to Cabernet Sauvignon): Merlot, Pinot Noir, Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot.

    • Other international varieties: Nielluccio, Montepulciano, Saperavi, Carmenère, Tempranillo and Abouriou.

👃🍇 Tasting notes & reviews

The young wine presents itself in a deep ruby red colour with violet reflections. The critics agree that a wine of great class is maturing here. The flavours and ratings at a glance:

  • Falstaff (Ulrich Sautter): 96/100 points. "A radiantly fresh aroma: sour cherry, plum, dark chocolate, thyme, juniper, garrigue. The palate is soft and almost oily, developing a very dense, sandy to fine-grained tannin.".

  • Jeb Dunnuck: 96-98/100 points. "With its bouquet of floral nuances, blueberry, blackberry, cumin, star anise, ink, black pepper, tobacco and red pepper... fresh and surprisingly savoury".

  • Tamlyn Currin (JancisRobinson.com): 17++/20 points. "Bloody and savoury; aniseed, ink, olive and iron. A very bloody flavour at this still very wild stage of its young life".

📆 The 2024 vintage: a dance with nature

The 2024 vintage was a challenge for winegrowers in France. A very wet spring, frost and hail made life difficult for winegrowers.

At Mas de Daumas Gassac, these challenges were met with patience and expertise. The harvest of the white grapes and some special red selections began according to plan. For the main grape variety Cabernet Sauvignon, however, they decided to take an artificial break to wait for perfect ripeness - a decision that paid off. Despite the difficult conditions, the result is a very positive vintage. The Guibert family describes 2024 as a "very good year" with "beautiful grapes, juices with a nice roundness and an acidity that brings excellent freshness at the end".

⏳ Ageing potential & drinking recommendation

This wine is a child of its time that needs to grow up.

  • Drinking maturity: It is still a "baby", as critics emphasise. Opening it for the first time can already be exciting (then be sure to decant it), but it will only develop its full potential with maturity.

  • Ageing potential: Experts agree that the wine has great ageing potential and can easily be stored for the next 20 years. The fullness, structure and fine-grained tannins are the best guarantees for a positive development.

💎 Summary

The Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge 2024 is an exceptional wine that receives the highest critics' ratings (96-98 points). It is the result of a unique terroir, a visionary winemaking family and a challenging but ultimately successful vintage. With its impressive complexity, clear fruit and mineral structure, it is a true "Grand Vin" with great ageing potential - an absolute must for all lovers of the Languedoc.
