Tasting note: Old German Vermouth 1937
Appearance:
The colour presents itself in deep mahogany with amber reflections, a sign of decades of ageing. The consistency is slightly viscous, with a gentle shimmer that indicates a complex texture. Despite its age, the clear brilliance is astonishing, possibly an indication of careful storage.
Bouquet (aroma):
The aroma spectrum is a fascinating archive of time: initially, a spicy, oxidative note of walnut and dried figs is dominant, accompanied by a subtle camphor and herbal freshness that refers to the eponymous wormwood (wormwood herb). Underneath, aromas of orange bitters, old liquorice, vanilla pods and a hint of noble wood oxidation resonate. A delicate smoky note rounds off the bouquet and adds depth.
Flavour (Taste):
A harmonious balance between bittersweet spiciness and mature sweetness unfolds on the palate. The bitter base of the wormwood meets ripened dates, candied ginger roots and a hint of dark chocolate. The alcoholic sharpness (probably around 18%) is gently integrated over the decades, carried by a lively but restrained acidity. The texture is silky, almost syrupy, with nuances of caramel and dried herbs such as thyme and mugwort.
Finish:
Long-lasting and meditative. The bitterness of the wormwood remains present, interwoven with a hint of roasted almonds and a mineral salt note. A warm, woody finish is reminiscent of matured sherry, accompanied by a gentle aftertaste of cloves and dried fruit.
Overall impression:
This vermouth is a historic jewel whose complexity could only come from decades of ageing. It combines the astringency of traditional German herbalism with the elegance of oxidative flavours. A piece of spirits history that should rather be enjoyed neat today - perhaps as a contemplative companion or with fine desserts. Its rarity (pre-war production!) makes it an object for collectors and connoisseurs, whose value goes far beyond the purely gustatory pleasure.
Note: Due to its age, individual bottle variations may occur; this is part of the fascination of such rarities.
