Tasting note: Gaja Barolo Conteisa Cerequio 1993
(Piedmont, Italy; Nebbiolo, 13.5-14% alcohol)
General:
The Gaja Barolo Conteisa 1993 comes from the renowned Cerequio site in La Morra, one of the best sites in Piedmont for elegant, complex Barolos. Angelo Gaja, an icon of Italian viticulture, has created a wine here that impresses with its precision and longevity despite the challenging 1993 vintage - characterised by cool, damp conditions.
Appearance:
Deep garnet red colour with orange reflections on the rim, a sign of its maturity. The viscosity is moderate, with slow, delicate tears in the glass.
Nose:
A ripe, multi-layered bouquet with tertiary aromas of dried rose petals, leather, tobacco and fine truffle. Underneath, subtle notes of preserved cherries, wild berries, balsamic vinegar and a mineral flavour (graphite, damp earth). Slight hints of dried herbs such as thyme emphasise the complexity.
Palate:
On the palate, the wine surprises with lively acidity, which gives it freshness despite its age. The tannins are silky and fully integrated, accompanied by a medium body. Aromas of ripe sour cherries, dried plums and liquorice mingle with earthy nuances (autumn leaves, mushrooms) and a subtle spiciness (clove, sandalwood). The balance between fruit, acidity and structure is remarkable.
Finish:
Long, elegant finish with an emphasis on balsamic notes (cola, cedar) and a salty minerality. A hint of bitter almond and tobacco rounds off the finish.
Maturation potential & drinking recommendation:
The wine is at the peak of its development and should now be savoured promptly. If stored well (cool, dark), it could remain stable for a few more years, but may lose some of its freshness. Uncork it at least one hour before serving to allow the flavours to develop.
Suitable dishes:
Classic accompaniments are game dishes (saddle of venison with porcini mushrooms), truffle risotto or mature cheese such as Parmigiano Reggiano. Also a pleasure on its own as a meditation wine.
Rating:
A fascinating, mature Barolo that reflects the signature of the Cerequio terroir and Gaja's skill. Despite the modest vintage, proof of the power of careful vinification and patience. ★★★★☆ (92/100).
