Domaine Duroché - Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 'Les Champeaux' 1991

Introduction:
The 1991 vintage in Burgundy is a year of contrasts. After a promising spring, a severe frost in April led to considerable yield losses. The remaining grapes ripened under good conditions and produced wines of remarkable concentration and finesse, albeit in small quantities. The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 'Les Champeaux' from the then little-known Domaine Duroché is a timeless example from this underrated vintage.

Domaine & location:
Domaine Duroché, now run by Pierre Duroché, was still a developing estate in 1991. The philosophy has always been to produce clean, terroir-faithful wines with refinement. The 'Les Champeaux' parcel is located on the eastern edge of Gevrey, above the Clos Saint-Jacques. Its soil consists of shallow, gravelly limestone over rocky ground, which gives the wines a special mineral character, elegance and a slender structure - in contrast to the powerful wines from the lower sites.

Sensory analysis (status: recent, but at its peak):

  • Colour: Medium garnet red with orange-brown ripe already clearly developed (otherwise clear colour, no cloudiness).

  • Nose: Complex and developed. Initial notes of ripe, dried morel, stewed plums and liquorice, which open up to fine aromas of truffle, damp earth, autumn leaves and a characteristic mineral note of chalk and foxstone. Subtle tertiary notes of leather and tobacco shimmer in the background.

  • Palate: Medium-bodied with surprising freshness and vibrancy, the tannins are fully integrated, silky and soft. The flavour repeats the aromas of the nose: ripe red fruit, mushrooms, a distinct mineral salinity and a pleasant earthy spiciness. The acidity is well integrated and carries the long, persistent flavour.

  • Overall impression:A wine of great elegance and complexity that emphasises finesse and nuances rather than power. It epitomises the classic, rather rustic Champeaux-Terror in its pure, ageing form.

Maturity & ageing potential:
The wine is on a mature plateau. It shows no signs of degradation, but the full harmony of ageing. If corked and stored properly (dark, cool, constant 12-14°C), it should maintain this level for another 3-5 years before the fruit gradually fades. It is a perfect example of the longevity and beauty of well-made Burgundy from solid, if not spectacular, vintages.

Recommendation:

  • Decant: Decant carefully 30-60 minutes before serving to aerate the wine and separate any sediment.

  • Temperature: Serve at approx. 14-15°C.

  • Food pairing:Classic Burgundy accompaniments such as poultry (partridge, pheasant), game (venison, wild duck) in sauces that are not too heavy, or mature, mild cheese (e.g. Comté, Brie de Meaux).

Conclusion:
The Duroché Gevrey-Chambertin 'Les Champeaux' 1991 is a moving and fascinating wine. It is not a powerhouse, but a testimony to elegance, terroir and the art of ageing. For lovers of classic, mature Burgundy, it offers a profound and rewarding experience, proving that 1991 - despite its adversities - produced very charming and drinkable wines that impress today in their perfect maturity.
