Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2012 - A triumph in a year of extremes

The Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2012is an outstanding example of how a top producer can create a world-class wine even under extreme climatic conditions. It shows that the true value of a wine is determined not only by the vintage, but above all by the winemaker's signature style.

🌍 The terroir: a royal vineyard

The Corton-Charlemagnesite is one of the most prestigious Grand Cru sites for white Burgundy. The hill of Corton lies like an amphitheatre in the middle of famous wine-growing villages at an altitude of 250-330 metres and forms a geological feature. The soils are characterised by Comblanchien limestone, which gives the wines their characteristic, steely minerality and enormous longevity. Coche-Dury owns an extremely small parcel here.

✨ The Coche-Dury wine estate

Domaine Coche-Dury is one of the most legendary and sought-after addresses for white Burgundy. Founded in the 1920s by Léon Coche, the estate was led to the top of the world by Jean-François Coche-Dury from the 1970s onwards. Since 2010, his son Raphaël has officially been in charge, continuing his father's uncompromising philosophy of quality.

📅 The 2012 vintage: a year of extremes and selection

2012 was characterised by extreme weather conditions in Burgundy and is considered a "winemaker's vintage" in which the producer's skills were decisive:

  • A cold, wet spring led to mildew (millerandage) and high disease pressure from mildew.

  • This was followed by hail damage, which decimated many vineyards.

  • Yields were extremely low - in the Côte de Beaune, only half the normal harvest volume was brought in.

However, the adverse conditions also led to a natural selection: the remaining grapes were of exceptional concentration and quality. The wines from this vintage are characterised by their enormous density and structure combined with outstanding freshness.

👃 Tasting notes and ratings

The reviews for this wine are euphoric. They describe a wine that, despite its youth, already shows great class and has enormous ageing potential.

Critics / PublicationRatingTasting note
Neal Martin (The Wine Advocate)97+ points"...the flavours unfold with a lightness that emphasises finesse over power: Beeswax, lime, lemon thyme and fresh pear... a tension and effortlessness that rolls across the palate like a giant Turkish carpet."
Allen Meadows (Burghound)95 points"...excellent power, weight and vigour... almost painful intensity... stunningly long, mineral-driven finish. The word 'WOW' definitely came to mind when I tasted it!"
Jancis Robinson19/20 points"Mushroom aromas, crème de morels. Very youthful and taut. Raphael says it's more concentrated than the others because the vineyard hasn't been spoilt. More energy. Long."
Tastingbook (aggregated rating)98 pointsThe algorithmically determined score reflects the consensus of the world's best critics and places the wine among the top wines in the world.

🍾 Conclusion and drinking maturity

Compared to the 2010 and 2011 vintages, the 2012 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne occupies an interesting middle position: it possesses the tremendous concentration and power of the 2010 and combines it with the earlier accessibility and finesse of the 2011.

  • Character: A monumental wine with "painful intensity", which is nevertheless carried by a vibrant freshness and a rare finesse.

  • Drinking window: Allen Meadows considers the optimum drinking window to be around 7 to 8 years of bottle ageing, although the wine should age excellentlyfor 10 to 12 years and longer. This means that the wine is currently (2026) in an ideal drinking window, but will continue to give pleasure for many years to come.

  • Special feature: Raphaël Coche emphasised that the Corton-Charlemagne was the only vineyard on the estate to be spared from hail in 2012. This makes it a unique witness to this challenging but magnificent vintage.

This wine is a must for any serious collector and lover of great white Burgundy.
