2. Origin & Historical Background

The 1993 vintage was of particular significance for Champagne Deutz. In that year, Louis Roedereracquired a majority stake in the house, which was in financial difficulties at the time. The new CEO , Fabrice Rosset, subsequently initiated the creation of a new prestige cuvée to demonstrate the exceptional quality of the house’s Chardonnays.

The name “Amour de Deutz” (Love of Deutz) is inspired by a statue of Cupid that has stood in the courtyard of the house in Aÿ since 1899 . The cuvée was launched as a champagne fit for the millennium and was intended to showcase a new, elegant side of Deutz.

The 1993 vintage was the veryfirst vintage of Amour de Deutz. The concept was to create an alternative to the more robust Cuvée William Deutz and to highlight the finesse of single-varietal Chardonnays .

3. The significance of the designations

The designations of this champagne already reveal its exceptional quality:

  • Blanc de Blancs: This means that the champagne has been made exclusively from the white Chardonnay grape variety. Grapes from Grand Cru vineyards are selected for the cuvée :

    • 60% from Mesnil-sur-Oger

    • 35% from Avize

    • 5% from Villers-Marmery

  • Prestige Cuvée: Alongside the Cuvée William Deutz, Amour de Deutz is the house’s most prestigious range and is producedonly in exceptional vintages. The 1993 vintage was not followed by any production in 1994, 1996, 2001 or 2004.

  • Extended ageing on thelees: This champagne benefits from an extremely long period of bottle ageing on the lees, which lends it its complex creaminess and brioche notes.

4. Character & flavour profile

Despite a difficult vintage (rain in September led to rot problems), Deutz succeeded in creating a masterpiece through the strictest selection of grapes. The wine displays a golden to pale golden colour spectrum with fine, persistent perlage.

Experts describe the aroma as complex and opulent:

  • notes of honey and citrus zest

  • Ripe stone fruit aromas: apricot, peach, quince

  • Notes of pastry and brioche

  • Minerality and impressive structure combined with delicate elegance

On the palate ,it is delicate and opulent, with just the right amount of freshness and vitality, leading into an aromatic and floral finish.

5. Rarity and availability

The Amour de Deutz 1993 is an absolute rarity:

  • Production: Only around 15,000 bottles were bottled.

  • Availability: Only 20 bottles remain in the possession of Maison Deutz itself today .

  • Price: The original retail price in the USA was around $150 per bottle. Today, it fetches several hundred to over a thousand euros at auctions and from specialist dealers.

6. Conclusion

The Amour de Deutz Brut 1993 is far more than just an old champagne. It is the brainchild of a new era for Champagne Deutz and the beginning of one of the most successful Blanc de Blancs ranges in Champagne. Its rarity, its origins in the finest Grand Cru vineyards and its exceptional quality make it a Holy Grail for collectors and connoisseurs. With a recommended drinking window extending to 2035, this champagne is a living testament to the art of long-term ageing and an unforgettable taste experience.
