Tasting note: Domaine Romanée-Conti La Romanée-Conti 1944

(Grand Cru, Burgundy, France)

Appearance

A soft, translucent ruby red with an amber-coloured brightening at the rim - a sign of noble ageing. Slight sediment deposits and a delicate viscosity betray the decades in the cellar. The colour is reminiscent of autumn leaves, but the clarity underlines the immaculate ageing.

Nose

A bouquet of transcendent complexity that breathes history:

  • Tertiary aromas: dried morella, truffle, damp leaves and old leather.

  • Botanical nuances: cedar wood, dried thyme and a hint of faded violets.

  • Oxidative elegance: Mushroom spice, tobacco leaf and a delicate hint of balsamic vinegar.

  • Terroir reflection: A mineral core of limestone and iron, typical of the sacred soil of La Romanée-Conti.

Palate

A ballet of time and finesse:

  • Fruit & Earth: faded cherry jam interwoven with aromas of porcini mushrooms and autumn truffles.

  • Acidity & structure: The acidity is amazingly lively - a thin silver thread that carries the dense flavours. The tannins, once powerful, are now velvety soft and barely noticeable.

  • Texture: Silky and weightless, almost ghostly, with a hint of bitterness reminiscent of dark chocolate and decaffeinated espresso.

Finish

A finish that lasts for minutes. Dominant are notes of toasted walnuts, dried herbs and a mineral saltiness that evokes the spirit of the terroir. The last memory is a melancholic sweetness, like the echo of a yellowed love letter.

Overall rating

A wine for the ages, combining the essence of Burgundy and the drama of the 1944 vintage. Produced in the midst of war, this wine reflects the resilience of viticulture. The Domaine Romanée-Conti has created a wine that sacrifices neither strength nor grace - a paradox of fragility and immortality.

Drinking window: A wine that has long since reached maturity, but is not yet in decline thanks to its acidity. Unique and unrepeatable.
Recommendation: Do not decant - serve gently from the bottle at 14-16°C. Accompanied by silence and respect, perhaps with a simple mushroom risotto or on its own as a meditation.

Note: A wine like this is a gift of time. Only with perfect provenance does it unfold its full poetry - a relic that has survived war, time and transience. 🍷🕊️

La Romanée-Conti 1944 is not a wine, but a monument: history, passion and the soul of Burgundy come together in one glass.

At the Domaine de la Romanée Conti, the motto is that the producer should only be an intermediary between the soil and the wine. Intervention is to be avoided at all costs and only recommended in special cases. The cellar master Aubert de Villaine expresses this as follows: "Nothing is more difficult than to act with simplicity; the ideal would be to do nothing at all - but that is not possible." The barrels used for the final maturation of Domaine Romanée Conti wines have been replaced every year since 1975, which naturally leads to considerable costs, but benefits the quality. In 1979, the high demand for French oak led Domaine Romanée Conti to procure the wood itself and make it available to the cooperage. The wood comes from the Troncais forests and is among the best on the market. In the past, bottling was always done in the ultra-traditional way, but this led to significant variations between bottles. In 1982, in agreement with the owners of Domaine Romanée Conti, the cellar master decided to bottle the wines in batches of 5 barrels in stainless steel tanks and to bottle them by gravity. The Domaine de La Romanée Conti is surrounded by many myths and legends. It produces one of the most expensive, if not the most expensive wine in the world. In recent years in particular, demand for Domaine Romanée Conti wines has risen sharply in Asia. To acquire a bottle of the legendary monopole wine Romanée Conti, you have to subscribe to a 12-bottle case and hope to get an allocation. There is no chance of getting hold of several bottles of Romanée Conti wine by subscription.
