Product information

Thanks to the outstanding post-war vintages of 1945, 1947 and 1949, the money collected could be invested in reconstruction and repair work. The winery had recovered from the turmoil of the war and began to reach new heights. The 1953 and 1959 vintages in particular played into the hands of the cellar masters at the chateau. Wines of the century with very long ageing potential were produced. However, the 1970s were not exactly the best references. Compared to the other well-known chateau wines from Bordeaux, only mediocre wines were produced and bottled. As a result, Eric de Rothschild made new investments and also turned the personnel carousel. A large part of the new investments at Chateau Lafite Rothschild went into a circular barrel cellar with a capacity of 2,200 barriques, a daring project at the time. After all, the wine industry in Bordeaux was at rock bottom in the early 1970s. Weak vintages and a recessionary global economy meant that many chateaux could barely survive and were struggling with a shortage of money and high energy costs caused by the oil crisis.
