Tasting note: Château Coutet à Barsac 1961
Colour:
A deep, liquid amber colour with copper reflections and golden glints on the rim. The colour betrays its age, but at the same time radiates an almost youthful brilliance, typical of superbly matured Sauternes. Light mahogany tones on the rim indicate the noble oxidation.
Nose:
A beguilingly complex bouquet that immediately entices with opulent tertiary aromas of candied oranges, liquid honey and burnt caramel, under which nuances of dried apricots, overripe pineapple and a noble botrytis spice (truffle, saffron) unfold. Slight oxidative accents (walnut, vanilla pod) combine harmoniously with a fresh mineral base (chalk, wet stone). A hint of cedar wood and old sherry casks round off the aroma profile.
Palate:
On the palate, the wine unfolds with majestic sweetness, perfectly balanced by a lively, cutting acidity. The texture is silky and dense, almost oily, carried by flavours of stewed quince, dates and candied ginger. The minerality (chalk, salt) pervades the palate like a golden framework, while subtle spicy notes (cinnamon, clove) are reminiscent of ageing in wooden barrels. Despite its richness, the wine remains light and elegant.
Finish:
The finish is endlessly long, dominated by a salty-bitter precision (grapefruit zest) and a reverberation of honeycomb, roasted almonds and a smoky minerality. The sweetness fades slowly, leaving a vibrant freshness that tickles the palate for minutes afterwards.
Overall impression:
Château Coutet 1961 is a monument to the art of Sauternes - a wine that combines the magic of the legendary vintage and the signature of the Barsac terroir. The combination of opulent sweetness, sharp-edged acidity and labyrinthine complexity makes it a timeless masterpiece. Despite its 60+ years, the wine is astonishingly vital, almost youthful in its energy, yet with the depth of a mature philosopher. A wine that not only tastes good, but also tells a story: of botrytis-covered autumn days, patient ageing and the poetry of decay.
Rating:★★★★★ (5/5 - A perfectly balanced, immortal Sauternes that transcends the boundaries of time and flavour. A piece of wine history in a glass).
Tip:
A wine of this era is a fragile wonder - this note is based on an example with impeccable provenance and ideal cellaring. Oxidative notes are subtly integrated and add to the complexity.
Context:
Vintage 1961:One of the greatest vintages of the 20th century for Bordeaux, characterised by optimal botrytis development due to damp autumn fog and sunny days. Wines of rare concentration and acidity were produced in Barsac.
Château Coutet: As a Premier Cru Classé from 1855, the estate stands for the typically delicate, mineral character of Barsac wines (in contrast to the more opulent neighbouring Sauternes appellation).
Terroir: The chalky soils ("Barsac Plateau") give the wine its distinctive acidity and salty minerality.
Vinification: Traditionally fermented in oak barrels, the ageing emphasises harmonious oxidation and complex spicy notes.
Longevity: Sauternes of this quality and vintage can easily last a century - this Coutet is proof.
"A wine that condenses the soul of Barsac in every sip: Honey, flint and infinity."
