Château l'Évangile, Pomerol
General information:
Château l'Évangile is one of the historically most important and qualitatively leading wine estates in the top Pomerolappellation . Although - like all Pomerols - it has no official classification, it is unanimously counted among the absolute "Premiers Crus" of the Right Bank. The estate has been owned by the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) since 1990 , who have fully utilised the existing potential with major investments and raised the quality to a new, stable peak level.
Site & soil:
The approximately 16-hectare vineyard is located on the prestigious Pomerol plateau in the immediate neighbourhood of legends such as Château Pétrus (to the north) and Château Cheval Blanc (to the south, across the border from Saint-Émilion). The soil is a characteristic mixture of clayey loam with inclusions of gravel and sand, resting on an iron-rich subsoil layer ("crasse de fer"). This soil structure provides strength, minerality and finesse.
Grape varieties & wine:
The grape variety distribution is approximately 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.
Under the aegis of DBR (Lafite), the style of the Grand Vin, Château l'Évangile, has been significantly refined. Today, it embodies the ideal synthesis of the powerful density of Pomerol and the elegant sophistication of the Rothschild philosophy, with aromas of ripe plums, black cherries, chocolate, truffles and fine cigar notes. The wine is deep and concentrated, but shows great balance and length thanks to its lively acidity and silky tannins. It has an enormous ageing potential (20-30+ years).
Specialities:
Rigorous selection:Only the best parcels (especially the clayey, middle sites) are used for the Grand Vin, which explains its exceptional concentration.
Blason de l'Évangile: The excellent second wine, made from younger vines or plots with sandier soils and accessible earlier.
Modern precision:The new owners introduced strict parcel selection, a complete renovation of the cellar and more precise vinification.
Rarity & prestige: The comparatively small production volume and the high proportion of old vines make the wine a sought-after collector's item.
Conclusion:
Château l'Évangile today epitomises a refined, polished yet profound Pomerol style, combining the natural opulence and sensuality of its great terroir with the technical perfection and pursuit of elegance of the Rothschild dynasty. The wine is one of Pétrus' closest neighbours, not only due to its geographical location but also in terms of quality, and is a timeless world-class wine.
