Château La Cardonne, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux

General information:

Château La Cardonne is a leading wine estate in the Blaye Côtes de Bordeauxappellation on the right bank of the Gironde. As a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur, it represents excellent value for money and is one of the region's most ambitious estates in terms of quality. The estate is owned by the Mähler-Bessefamily (who also have a stake in Château Palmer in the Médoc) and is managed with a focus on modernity and accessibility.

Site & Soil:

The approximately 90 hectares of vineyards are located on the clay-limestone hills of Blaye with ideal south and south-west exposures. These soils, similar to those of neighbouring Saint-Émilion-Pieds, offer good drainage and promote the ripening of the grapes.

Grape varieties & wine:

The grape variety distribution is typical of the Right Bank: around 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc.
The main wine, Château La Cardonne, is a modern, fruit-orientated and accessible Bordeaux. It impresses with its aromatic, juicy fruit bouquet (red and black berries, plums) and a soft, round texture with fine, supple tannins. The ageing in barriques (approx. 30% new) gives it a subtle flavour. It is a wine that is already a pleasure to drink in its youth, but can also develop over several years.

Specialities:

  • Modern management:The estate benefits from the investments and expertise of the owner family as well as the advice of the renowned oenologist Michel Rolland.

  • Second wine: Le Haut-Médoc de La Cardonne offers an uncomplicated version that can be drunk even earlier.

  • Value orientation:As a top wine from the Blaye region, La Cardonne often offers a convincing alternative to more expensive wines from more prestigious appellations.

  • Sustainability: The estate is increasingly focussing on environmentally friendly cultivation methods.

Conclusion:

Château La Cardonne is an excellent ambassador for the qualitative potential of the Côtes de Bordeaux. It stands for a well-made, consistent and, above all, pleasure-orientated wine that presents the sun-drenched, fruity characteristics of the Right Bank in a highly accessible form. For lovers of a modern, soft and aromatic Bordeaux style, it is a highly recommended and frequently award-winning choice.
