Julian Haart - Ohligsberg Riesling Kabinett 'WURZELECHT' 2023

1.Classification & background:
Julian Haart is one of the young, up-and-coming stars of the Mosel wine scene. His focus is on working with ancient, ungrafted vines (hence the addition "WURZELECHT") on the best steep slopes in Piesport, in particular the Ohligsberg. The cultivation is consistently organic, with minimal intervention in the cellar. The Ohligsberg is known for its blue Devonian slate weathered soils, which produce particularly mineral, finely structured Rieslings.

2. Sensory description:

  • Colour: Pale straw yellow with silvery reflections, youthful freshness.

  • Nose: Extremely fragrant and transparent. Intense aromas of white peach, green apple, mirabelle plum and a hint of citrus blossom emerge, with the typical slate minerality underneath, reminiscent of damp pebbles and a fresh, cool breeze. Not a trace of botrytis, but pure, precise fruit.

  • Palate: The elegant, light impression is confirmed on the palate. The fruit is juicy and clear, carried by a lively, laser-like acidity that gives the wine fantastic vigour. The sweetness (Kabinett style) is perfectly integrated and serves to add fullness, not heaviness. It plays harmoniously with the salty minerality and the alcohol content is very low. The finish is long, clear and immediately calls for the next taste.

3.Rating & character:
The 'Wurzelecht' 2023 is a prime example of a modern, high-class Mosel Kabinett. It combines the lightness and elegance of the classic style with an unrivalled drinking flow and mineral depth. It is not an opulent wine, but a filigree, almost floating wine of great refinement and transparency. It shows the pure, unadulterated language of the Ohligsberg slate and Julian Haart's masterful signature.

4.Potential & ageing recommendation:
Despite its already enchanting drinkability, this Kabinett has clear ageing potential. The taut acidity and mineral structure suggest that it will gain in complexity over the next 5-10 years. Stored in a cool (10-12°C), dark and quiet place, it will develop splendidly.

5.Serving and food recommendations:
Ideal aperitif wine. Pairs perfectly with light, delicate dishes such as steamed fish, scallops, goat's cheese salad or Asian cuisine (sushi, light curries). Its acidity and sweetness also make it a perfect accompaniment to Asian cuisine that is not too spicy.

Conclusion:
Julian Haarts Ohligsberg Kabinett 'Wurzelecht' 2023 is a breathtakingly pure, elegant and invigorating Riesling. It embodies the essence of the Moselle: finesse, mineral tension and unrivalled drinking pleasure. A wine that delights both connoisseurs with its complexity and new discoverers with its immediate accessibility. A highlight of the 2023 vintage.
