Product information

The Burlotto Barolo Riserva Speciale 1971 is a legendary Barolofrom Piedmont that has matured for over 50 years. Such wines are extremely rare today and their evaluation depends heavily on ageing. Typical characteristics based on historical tastings and expert notes:

Tasting note Burlotto Barolo Riserva Speciale 1971

  • Colour:
Deep garnet red with amber reflections - classic signs of maturity. Clarity shows good ageing.

  • Nose:
Complex and multi-layered: dried roses, stewed cherries, truffles, leather, tobacco and damp earth. Tertiary notes of forest floor, mushrooms, cedar wood and a hint of balsamic vinegar. Elegant oxidation notes (sherry touch) without appearing tired.

  • Palate:
Surprising liveliness at this age. Ripe red fruits (preserved cherries, plums), carried by salty minerality and gentle acidity. Tannins fully integrated - silky and long. Long development with notes of liquorice, tar and dried herbs.

  • Structure:
Balanced, with floating elegance despite its age. Voluminous, but never heavy. Long finish with a tart cherry flavour and smoky finish.

  • Ageing potential:
At its peak, but should last for years if kept intact (although not for further development). Drinking window now!

Evaluation context

  • Vintage 1971:A very good vintage in Piedmont (better than 1970 and on a par with the legendary 1978). Only perfectly stored wines have survived.

  • Speciality: The "Riserva Speciale" was Burlotto's top selection - often from the Cru Monvigliero (Verduno), known for its elegant, perfumed Baroli.

  • Storage:Crucial! Cool, dark storage without temperature fluctuations maintains freshness. Cork defects or oxidation can ruin the bottle.

  • Rarity: An intact bottle is a collector's item.

Recommendation for tasting

  • Temperature: 16-18°C

  • Decanting: Carefully 1-2 hours before to separate sediment. Taste immediately, as flavours can fade quickly.

  • Accompaniment: Game dishes (venison with porcini mushrooms), truffle risotto or old Parmigiano Reggiano. Alternatively, enjoy neat as a meditation potion.

"A contemporary document of Piedmontese elegance - not a powerhouse, but a quiet poet with an infinite finish."

If you own a bottle: Check the cork/filling level professionally before opening. Enjoy this jewel! 🍷
