Product information
The G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero 1996 is an iconic wine from a century-old vintagein Piedmont. Burlotto's Monvigliero cru is considered the epitome of perfumed elegance and mineral complexity - the 1996 combines this DNA with the structure of a great vintage. Here is a typical tasting note based on current tastings (as of 2024/25):
Tasting note G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero 1996
Colour:
Clear garnet red colour with orange-coloured rim. Slight opacity due to sediment, but vital depth.Nose:
Hypnotic intensity: rose petals, violets, dried herbs (sage, thyme) and cherry-red fruit. Underneath, layers of truffle, damp clay, sandalwood and a smoky minerality ("pepperstone" Monvigliero type). Not a trace of ageing fatigue - instead, ripe, focussed aromas.Palate:
Perfect balance between power and grace: juicy sour cherry, ripe plum and orange peel, carried by lively acidity and salty, rugged tannins (still present, but silky). Mid-palate with a long finish - notes of liquorice, tar, rooibos tea and fresh forest soil.Structure:
Monumental, but never heavy. Tannin framework as if chiselled from a single piece, acidity carries the wine with resilience. Finishes for over 45 seconds with a cool, mineral character.Ageing potential:
At its peak, with a long plateau (another 10-15+ years). Drinkable now after long decanting, but still shows development potential.
Evaluation context
Vintage 1996: One of the great classics in Piedmont (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️). Structural depth, perfect acidity and slow ripening profile. Ideal for Monvigliero's elegant austerity.
Cru Monvigliero:Burlotto's historic centrepiece in Verduno. Cool limestone marl soils give the wine its floral precision and "vertical" minerality.
Vinification: Traditional long maceration (→ complex flavours), large oak barrels (→ pure fruit).
Rarity & value: Auction prices 500-800€/bottle, depending on condition. Intact bottles are highly sought after.
Tasting recommendation
Temperature: 16-17°C (not too cool → otherwise the flavours will not develop).
Decanting: At least 3-4 hours (young tannins need air). Separate the sediment.
Pairing: Venison with truffle polenta, risotto ai funghi porcini or mature pecorino.
Drinking moment: Ideal on quiet evenings - the wine demands attention.
"A Barolo of silence: no thunder, but a persistent, seismic hum - Monvigliero's terroir magnifiez in its purest form."
Storage check before opening: Fill level ≥ lower shoulder, cork intact? If in doubt, have it professionally checked. A wine like this deserves respect! 🍷
