Tasting note: Bollinger Champagne Brut Special Cuvée NV (1990 vintage)
Colour:
A deep, noble gold with copper-coloured reflections that hint at decades of ageing. The bubbles are fine and restrained, rising slowly in gentle chains - a sign of the time that has transformed the sparkling energy into calm elegance.
Nose:
The aromas are deep and complex, with a harmonious interplay of tertiary nuancesand restrained freshness. Toasted hazelnut, honeycomb and buttered brioche are dominant, surrounded by dried apricots, caramel and a smoky minerality. Light notes of orange peel, wax and a hint of truffle lend aristocratic depth to the nose.
Palate:
A powerful yet balanced structure is revealed on the palate, where ripeness dominates with flavours of baked apple, marzipan and almond biscuits, carried by a surprisingly present yet integrated acidity. The texture is creamy and silky, with subtle tannins from the Pinot Noir dominance. Notes of sherry oxidation, ginger and a salty spiciness (slate) add vibrancy. Maturation in oak barrels leaves a gentle spiciness (vanilla pod).
Finish:
The finish is long and thoughtful, characterised by a smoky spiciness, roasted nuts and a delicate bitterness reminiscent of walnut shell. A hint of citrus jam and damp chalk lingers as an elegant echo.
Overall impression:
A dignified veteran that shows the Bollinger signature in its purest form: power, complexity and an almost sculptural precision. Despite its age (around 30 years), the champagne retains a remarkable vitality, with the youthful freshness giving way to a mature, nuanced depth. A wine that celebrates the magic of time in the bottle - not fireworks, but a gentle flicker of memory.
Ageing potential:
At the peak of its development - further ageing could reduce the remaining acidity and finesse. Drink now to experience the balance.
Rating:★★★★½ (4.5/5 stars) - A timeless piece of Champagne history that emphasises the art of ageing and Bollinger's mastery. An experience for lovers of mature Blanc de Noirs characters.
