Tasting note: Weingut Keller Monsheimer Silberberg Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese Goldkapsel 1999
(Rheinhessen, Germany; Rieslaner [Riesling × Silvaner]; 7.5-8% alcohol)
General:
The Monsheimer Silberberg Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese Goldkapsel 1999 from Weingut Keller is a rarity even among German sweet wines. The Rieslaner, a cross between Riesling and Silvaner, unfolds an exotic opulence here as Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA). The year 1999 in Rheinhessen was favoured by late autumn botrytis, which influenced the concentration and complexity of this "golden capsule". Klaus Keller, a pioneer of top Rheinhessen wines, created a timeless jewel with this wine that combines sweetness, acidity and mineral precision.
Appearance:
Deep amber gold with copper-coloured reflections and greenish shimmering edges. The texture appears thick, almost syrupy, with viscous, slow tears in the glass. Light sediments indicate maturity.
Nose:
A bombastic, multi-layered bouquet: honeycomb, overripe mango, dried apricots and candied orange peel. Tertiary nuances of caramel, beeswax and noble sherry (Oloroso) are joined by botrytis notes of mushroom, truffle and a smoky minerality (pebbles). Slightly floral undertones (lime blossom) and an exotic spice (saffron, ginger) round off the flavour.
Palate:
Opulent and yet light as a feather. The sweetness is intense, but is supported by lively acidity, which gives the wine a floating elegance. Flavours of date jam, pineapple in rum, marzipan and candied citrus fruits dominate. The texture is silky-dense, with a salty undercurrent (brine) and a subtle bitterness (grapefruit zest). The balance between fruit, acidity and botrytis spice is masterful.
Finish:
Extremely long finish that persists for minutes. Notes of roasted almonds, honeydew melon and a cool minerality (slate) linger. The finish is characterised by a harmonious bitterness that elegantly contrasts the sweetness.
Maturation potential & drinking recommendation:
The wine is at the peak of its development, but still has potential for 20-40 years with ideal storage (12-14 °C, dark) thanks to its acid structure. Serving temperature: 8-11 °C.
Suitable dishes:
Perfect with creamy desserts such as crème brûlée, gorgonzola dolce or foie gras. Also suitable as an accompaniment to Asian dishes (spicy Thai curries) or on its own as a meditation wine.
Rating:
A stunning, profound sweet wine that epitomises the magic of Rieslaner and Keller's signature style. Its rarity and complexity make it a collector's item. ★★★★★ (98/100).
Tip:
Rieslaner TBAs are rarities even in Germany - this gold capsule TBA is one of the icons of Rheinhessen wine culture. The 1999 vintage in Rheinhessen produced concentrated but fresh wines that were particularly suitable for sweet wines. Comparable to the great TBAs of the Palatinate winegrower Müller-Catoir, but with Rheinhessen sunshine.
