Tasting note: Aurel Herbig - Yellow Muscat Trockenbeerenauslese Rust 1963

Appearance:
The colour presents itself in a deep amber tone with golden reflections, fading slightly into copper at the edge. The clarity is remarkable, and the viscous "tears" on the glass reveal the concentrated sweetness of this vintage.

Bouquet:
A complex bouquet unfolds on the nose, dominated by dried apricots, figs and sultanas. Notes of lime blossom honey, orange marmalade and a fine spiciness of clove with a subtle nuttiness reminiscent of roasted almonds resonate underneath. With delicate oxidation, a wafer-thin caramel note lends depth to the bouquet.

Palate:
The palate reveals a regal sweetness that is perfectly balanced by a lively acidity. The texture is velvety and oily, carried by flavours of candied citrus fruits, dates and a hint of saffron. Despite its age, the wine displays an astonishing freshness that harmoniously accompanies the concentrated fruit and ripe, honey-like sweetness.

Finish:
The finish is exceptionally long and elegant. Notes of beeswax, old wood and a mineral salinity linger for minutes, accompanied by a subtle bitterness reminiscent of bitter orange peel and providing structure.

Overall impression:
Aurel Herbig's 1963 Gelbmuskat Trockenbeerenauslese is a timeless masterpiece that epitomises the art of Austrian sweet winemaking. Despite its age, the wine radiates a youthful vitality, while the complex tertiary flavours underline its maturity. A rare, historic wine that demonstrates the terroir elegance of Rust and the longevity of Gelber Muskateller at the highest level. A truly museum-quality wine for connoisseurs and collectors.
