Louis Roederer – Prestige and perfection from Reims

The Louis Roederer Champagne house in Reims is one of the last major, independent and family-run houses in Champagne. It was founded in 1776 under the name Dubois Père & Fils. The foundations for its later worldwide fame were laid by Louis Roederer, who inherited the company from his uncle in 1833 and gave it his own name.

Since then, the house has been inextricably linked to the history of Champagne. arguably the most significant milestone was the creation of the Cuvée Cristal in 1876. It was developed on commission from Tsar Alexander II as the world’s first prestige cuvée. The famous transparent bottle with a flat base was designed to prevent assassins from filling it with explosives unnoticed – an anecdote that continues to contribute to the legend of this champagne to this day.

The house has always remained in the hands of the same family. Louis Roederer was succeeded by his descendants, including the remarkable Camille Olry-Roederer, who steered the company for over 40 years through the crises of the world wars and the Great Depression. Since 2006, Louis Roederer has been led by Frédéric Rouzaud, representing the seventh generation.

The secret to its consistently high quality lies in the exceptional terroir. The House owns around 240 hectares ofvineyards, spread across 410 individual plots in the three major wine-growing regions of Champagne: the Montagne de Reims, the Côte des Blancs and the Marne Valley. Over two-thirds of these areas are classified as Grand Cru. To make the best possible use of the diversity of the soils, each plot is vinified separately. The house is firmly committed to sustainable and biodynamic viticulture.

Today, Louis Roederer is not only renowned for its Cristal and its excellent Brut Premier, but is also at the heart of a small group of prestigious estates, including Château Pichon-Longueville-Comtesse de Lalande in Bordeaux and the port wine house . With an annual production of over 3.5 million bottles, which are exported to more than 80 countries, Louis Roederer remains an unshakeable symbol of luxurious and masterfully crafted Champagne.
