Bischöfliches Konvikt Trier winery: ecclesiastical heritage and the art of winegrowing on the Moselle
The Bischöfliches Konvikt in Trier, one of the oldest cities in Germany, has combined spiritual work with the art of viticulture for centuries. As part of the Trier seminary, founded in the 16th century, the winery is part of a direct tradition of ecclesiastical vineyard management dating back to Roman times. The vineyards are located in the heart of the Moselle, a region known for its steep slate slopes and world-famous Rieslings.
The Konvikt's vineyards, including renowned single vineyards, benefit from mineral slate soils and the mild microclimate of the Moselle bends. It is mainly Riesling vines that thrive here, producing wines with delicate acidity, green apple flavours and striking minerality. Traditional grape varieties such as Pinot Noir and Müller-Thurgau are also cultivated.
The philosophy of the winery is characterised by sustainability and respect for creation. As an ecclesiastical organisation, the estate uses environmentally friendly cultivation methods, does not use synthetic pesticides and promotes biodiversity by planting green rows of vines. Historic vaulted cellars, in which the wines mature in stainless steel and large wooden barrels, emphasise the combination of tradition and modern cellar technology.
The Konvikt invites visitors to guided wine tastings, often combined with insights into the history of the seminary and the city of Trier. The wines, which have won several awards at competitions such as the "Mondial des Vins", reflect the strength of the Moselle terroir.
As a guardian of ecclesiastical and viticultural tradition, the Bischöfliches Konvikt stands for a unique symbiosis of faith, culture and perfect craftsmanship - a place that lets you taste history.
