WongAmat by Jan Raumland – Rheinhessen tradition meets Thai roots
In the heart of Rheinhessen, in Flörsheim-Dalsheim, one of Germany’s most exciting young wineries is taking shape: WongAmat by Jan Raumland. The name is a loving tribute to the winemaker’s Thai heritage – a made-up word derived from his mother’s surname, Wongse-Amatyakul.
Jan Wongse Raumland, the namesake and winemaker behind WongAmat, has taken an unconventional path. Before releasing his first wines in 2021, he worked as a sommelier, completed an winemaking apprenticeship with Emrich-Schönleber and gained formative experience with Klaus Peter Keller as well as in South Africa. It was there that he also met his wife, Katharina Raumland, from the renowned Sekthaus dynasty.
The winery is an ambitious project on a very small scale. Jan cultivates exclusive, 100 per cent certified organic plots in prime vineyard sites. The Dalsheimer Bürgel, with its limestone and clay-rich soils, produces elegant, fresh Pinot Noir. The Kriegsheimer Rosengarten, a warm, gravelly south-facing slope, produces more powerful, darker Pinots with smoky, reductive aromas. Since 2022, Cabernet Franc from the Untertürkheimer Herzogenberg has complemented the range.
Jan himself describes his philosophy as “delicate, fruity, refined”. He works without rigid formulas, favouring minimal intervention, long maceration periods and ageing in used barriques to bring out the terroir and purity of the fruit to the full. Since 2024, the white wine label WongSiri has expanded the range with a highly acclaimed Chardonnay from just eight rows of vines and a first Riesling.
Although 2024 was only the fourth vintage, WongAmat is already enjoying international acclaim. Renowned sommeliers from Barcelona, Geneva and Brazil feature the wines. Critics praise the exceptional maturity and distinct style. WongAmat combines Thai roots, Rheinhessen tradition and uncompromising quality in a project that enriches the German wine scene in the long term.
