Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – An icon in Burgundy and around the world

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) is not merely a winery – it is the undisputed pinnacle of the wine world. Hardly any other name is spoken by collectors and connoisseurs with such mythical reverence as this one. The DRC, as it is affectionately known, is situated in the Burgundian commune of Vosne-Romanée and represents the absolute pinnacle of Pinot Noir .

The roots of this legend stretch back to the 13th century, when Benedictine monks from Saint-Vivant Abbey planted the first vineyards . However, the estate received the decisive impetus for its fame in the 18th century, when the Prince of Conti secured the eponymous vineyard Romanée-Conti in a fierce bidding war against Madame de Pompadour, the mistress of King Louis XV . He refused to share even a single bottle of this wine, which cemented his status as a legend. Following the French Revolution, the estate changed hands several times until it was acquired in 1869 by the Duvault-Blochet family, who expanded it to its current size through further acquisitions .

The estate owns some of Burgundy’s most exclusive vineyards, all of which are classified as Grand Cru. At its heart lies the Romanée-Conti monopole, covering just 1.8 hectares, from which barely more than 6,000 bottles are produced each year. These are complemented by other prestigious vineyards such as La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Grands Échezeaux. With a total production of just around 6,000 cases per year, the DRC’s wines are extremely rare and rank among the most expensive in the world. A bottle of the eponymous Romanée-Conti costs on average over 21,000 US dollars. At auctions, prices of half a million dollars are even achieved for exceptional vintages such as the legendary 1945. The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is and remains the epitome of Burgundian perfection – a liquid work of art that seems unattainable and yet makes the hearts of wine lovers all over the world beat faster.
