Von Othegraven Winery - A brief portrait
The Von Othegraven wine estate, one of the most renowned wine estates on the Saar (Moselle), looks back on a centuries-old tradition. Founded in the 18th century and characterised by noble origins, it is located in picturesque Kanzem, where steep slate slopes offer ideal conditions for growing Riesling. Since 2006, the estate has been run by the Reh family, who have preserved the historical values while adding modern touches.
The vineyards are among the best sites in the region, including the famous Kanzemer Altenberg site, a VDP.Grosse Lage(Grand Cru). Rieslings of mineral precision and elegant finesse thrive here. The vines are rooted in ancient slate soil, which gives the wines their characteristic salty flavour and complex structure. Sustainability is the focus: manual harvesting, reduced yields and environmentally friendly cultivation ensure the highest quality.
Traditional methods dominate the cellar work. Fermentation in large wooden barrelsemphasises the minerality typical of the terroir, while careful ageing develops the delicate aromas of the wines. The portfolio ranges from dry "Kanzemer Riesling" to delicately fruity Kabinett wines and noble sweet Prädikat wines, which can age for decades thanks to their lively acidity.
As a member of the VDP(Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates), Von Othegraven stands for top quality. International wine media and critics regularly praise the balance of strength and elegance of the wines.
The estate combines history and modernity: in addition to preserving its heritage, it opens its doors to wine lovers with tastings and events. A visit is worthwhile - not only for the wine, but also for the view into the historic vaulted cellars and the picturesque landscape of the Saar.
