Château Yon-Figeac – A classic from Saint-Émilion

Château Yon-Figeac is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé and ranks among the most traditional estates in this renowned appellation on the right bank of Bordeaux. Built in 1886, the limestone château is situated in the north-west of the village of Saint-Émilion on the prestigious Figeac plateau, in the immediate vicinity of some of the region’s most famous estates .

The estate’s history dates back to 1800 and is closely linked to that of Château Figeac. Following financial difficulties, what was then Saint-Émilion’s largest estate was divided up, and numerous well-known estates emerged from these plots – including Château Yon-Figeac . Since 2005, the estate has been owned by Vignobles Alain Chateau, who have managed it with great dedication ever since .

The vineyards cover around 24 hectares, making Château Yon-Figeac one of the largest single-owner estates in the appellation . The soils consist of sand and clay over an iron-rich subsoil, known as ‘crasses de fer’, which lend the wine its characteristic minerality . The blend is classic for the Right Bank of Bordeaux: 80 per cent Merlot, 13 per cent Cabernet Franc and 7 per cent Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of 32 years .

The winemaking process follows a precise methodology: the grapes are harvested by hand with plot-by-plot selection and mechanical sorting . Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with maceration lasting 25 to 30 days and accompanied by controlled extraction and warm maceration following fermentation . The wine is aged for twelve months in French oak barrels, 40 per cent of which are new .

The wines of Château Yon-Figeac are characterised by finesse and elegance. They display concentrated yet silky textures with aromas of black and red fruits, as well as a characteristic spiciness . Falstaff awarded the 2019 vintage 91 points and described notes of ripe plums, black cherries and delicate herbal spice . For wine lovers, Château Yon-Figeac offers the opportunity to enjoy a classic Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé that impressively combines tradition and quality.
