Bruno Giacosa – The silent master of the Langhe
In the gently rolling hills of Piedmont, where the morning mist still hesitantly creeps over the vines of the Langhe and the evening sun bathes the ancient walls of Neive in warm gold, there lived and worked a man whose name is inextricably linked to the very soul of Nebbiolo – Bruno Giacosa.
Born in 1929 in Neive, he grew up in a family that had been trading in wine since the 19th century, though initially they did not own any vineyards of their own. At the age of just 15, he followed in his ancestors’ footsteps and began working as a grape négociant – a role that made him an unrivalled connoisseur of the Piedmontese terroirs. It is said that he was the ‘Piedmontese truffle pig’, who gained early access to the finest grapes from the most renowned vineyards .
In 1961, Bruno Giacosa bottled his first Barbaresco under his own name. This was followed in 1964 by Piedmont’s first single-vineyard wine – a revolution that was to change the wine world forever. His philosophy was simple and ingenious: the deepest respect for the terroir, long maceration periods and ageing in large, traditional wooden barrels, which lend the wine its timeless structure and ageing potential. He rejected barriques throughout his life, as he believed a Barolo without noticeable tannins was a distortion of the grape variety.
His wines from the legendary vineyards of Asili, Rabajà and Santo Stefano in Barbaresco, as well as Falletto in Barolo, are milestones in Italian wine history. They combine power and finesse, elegance and complexity – wines of extraordinary richness and unparalleled longevity. Giacosa was a perfectionist who would discard entire vintages if the quality did not meet his exacting standards.
In January 2018, the great master passed away. Yet his legacy lives on through his daughter Bruna, who runs the winery with the same dedication and passion. Bruno Giacosa was a quiet giant who never made a fuss about himself – yet his wines speak a language that transforms every sip into a poem of Nebbiolo, time and the enduring Piedmontese spirit .
