“Domaine Sauzet – Elegance and terroir from Puligny-Montrachet”

The Domaine Etienne Sauzet, situated in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet,is one of the world’s most renowned producers of Burgundy white wine. The estate was founded in the 1920s by the charismatic Etienne Sauzet (1903–1975). Not only did he masterfully expand his vineyards – through inheritance, marriage and acquisitions in the 1950s, the area grew to seven and a half hectares – but, as a shrewd businessman, he also knew how to get his wines onto the wine lists of the finest Parisian restaurants, which secured the Domaine’s definitive breakthrough.

The history of the domaine is characterised by a special family tradition: it is the sons-in-law who carry on the legacy with the utmost care. In 1974, Gérard Boudot, the husband of Etienne Sauzet’s granddaughter Jeanine, took over the reins and steered the estate to the very top of the Burgundian white wine producers. Since 2006, responsibility has lain with the next generation: daughter Emilie Boudot and her husband, the winemaker Benoît Riffault, who now run the estate together.

The domaine’s vineyards now cover around 14 to 15 hectares and are situated on some of the most sought-after soils in the Côte de Beaune. The terroir of Puligny-Montrachet, with its chalky soils, gives the wines their unmistakable minerality and linear acidity. The portfolio of vineyards is breathtaking: in addition to several grand Premier Cru sites such as ‘Les Combettes’, ‘Les Folatières’ and ‘Champ Canet’, it also includes holdings in the legendary Grands Crus Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet .

Domaine Sauzet’s style is the result of uncompromising work in the vineyard and precise vinification. The estate has been organically farmed since 2006 and biodynamically farmed since 2010. The grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed whole. The wine is aged in oak barrels with a moderate proportion of new oak, to bring out the fruit and terroir to their fullest potential. The result is exceptionally elegant, complex and long-lived white wines of great finesse, which can be found in the world’s most renowned top-class restaurants and enjoy legendary status amongst collectors and connoisseurs.
