The Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé in Chambolle-Musigny is not merely a top-class estate – it is Burgundy’s living history book. Its roots stretch back to the late 14th century, when a certain Jean Moisson laid the foundations and, around 1400, even financed the old parish church . Through marriage, the estate passed to the de Vogüé family in 1766, who have been running it ever since – now in the 20th generation. The modern wines are still matured today in the impressive 15th-century vaulted cellar.
With just over 12 hectares of vineyards, the estate is not huge, but its holdings are of truly exceptional quality. At its heart lies a proud three-quarters share of the entire Musigny Grand Cru vineyard – a monopoly that is unrivalled in Burgundy. Added to this are significant plots in the Grand Cru Bonnes-Mares and the Premier Cru Les Amoureuses. The absolute flagship is the ‘Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes’, a Pinot Noir of such depth and elegance that it ranks among the world’s most sought-after wines.
Yet even such a legendary estate has experienced its ups and downs. Following a golden age of unforgettable vintages between 1945 and 1972, a lean period ensued. The turning point came in the late 1980s with the appointment of oenologist François Millet, estate manager Jean-Luc Pepin and vineyard manager Eric Bourgogne. Since then, the team has managed to return to the very pinnacle of the world.
The wines of Comte de Vogüé are today the epitome of Burgundian virtuosity: breathtakingly refined, yet possessing immense depth and a soaring elegance. They are rare works of art that are held in the highest regard by collectors – and the living legacy of a family that has been inextricably linked to the soil of Chambolle-Musigny for over five centuries .
