Seven centuries of Mosel Riesling: the timeless legacy of Reinhold Haart

In picturesque Piesport on the Moselle, where the steep slopes rise high above the river, lies one of Germany’s oldest wineries: the Reinhold Haart Winery. The history of this winemaking family is nothing short of breathtaking – as early as 1337, the Haarts were first mentioned in records as owners of vineyards in Piesport. This makes the family one of the oldest winemaking dynasties in the entire Mosel region.

The winery in its present form came into being in the early 1920s following the division of the large Josef Haart estate amongst seven siblings – Reinhold Haart received his share and gave the business his name. Today, this legacy is being carried on in impressive fashion by Karl-Theo Haart, his wife Edith and their son Johannes. The family’s passion and expertise were recognised in 2007 by the renowned wine guide Gault Millau, when father and son Haart were named ‘Winemaker Duo of the Year’.

Across around eight hectares of vineyards, the estate cultivates exclusively the ‘king of grapes’, Riesling. The plots are spread across some of the most prestigious sites on the Moselle: the famous Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, the Grafenberg, the Ohligsberg and the Kreuzwingert – a small, just 0.1-hectare monopoly vineyard solely owned by the Haarts. The deep slate soils of the steep slopes lend the wines their unmistakable minerality and finesse.

Since 1992, the winery has been a member of the prestigious Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP). Strict attention is paid to sustainability in the vineyard: artificial fertilisers are completely avoided, and since 2014 the estate has received support from the FAIR’N GREEN sustainability initiative. The range includes both off-dry to dry Rieslings as well as noble sweet Spätlese and Auslese wines, which delight with their intense fruit aromas, lively acidity and delicate minerality. Awards such as five stars in Parker’s Wine Buyer’s Guide and four grapes in Gault Millau underline the estate’s top-class quality. With an annual production of around 48,000 bottles, Reinhold Haart’s wines rank among the most sought-after Rieslings of the Moselle – a living testament to over seven centuries of unbroken winemaking tradition.
