The Dr Loosen winery, located in picturesque Wehlen on the Moselle, is one of the most influential addresses for world-famous Rieslings. Family-owned for over 200 years, the estate was revitalised in 1988 by Ernst Loosen, who interpreted the tradition of steep-slope viticulture in a modern way with visionary commitment and made it internationally renowned.
The legendary single vineyards such as the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the Bernkasteler Lay, the Ürziger Würzgarten and the Erdener Prälatform the heart of the estate. The steep slate slopes of the Moselle, in particular the blue-grey Devonian slate soils of the "Sonnenuhr", lend the Rieslings a unique minerality, elegance and long-lasting complexity. Many of the vines are over 100 years old and are ungrafted - a precious heritage that characterises the density and depth of the wines.
Dr Loosen focuses on natural cultivation, reduced yields and careful vinification. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts and long maturation on the fine lees dominate. The wines range from delicate, dry GGs (Große Gewächse) to expressive Kabinett and Spätlese wines and opulent Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese wines.
As a member of the VDP(Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates), the estate stands for the highest quality standards. International awards, including regular top rankings from Robert Parker and Wine Spectator, as well as the estate's role as an ambassador for German Riesling worldwide, emphasise its importance.
Ernst Loosen's philosophy - "Old vines, old vineyards, old values" - is reflected in every bottle. With projects such as the "J.L. Wolf"co-operation in the Palatinate, the estate is expanding its range, but always remains closely linked to the Moselle.
