Domaine de Montille – The pioneering spirit of Volnay that reimagined tradition

Where the gentle slopes of the Côte de Beaune bask in the morning sun and the Pinot Noir vines soak up the limestone terroir of Volnay, there lies a vineyard that has shaped the history of Burgundy like no other. Domaine de Montille – a name that resonates with centuries of history, evoking a family whose roots stretch back to the 17th century.

The estate’s modern history began in 1947, when the then 17-year-old Hubert de Montille took over the estate. The respected lawyer from Dijon led a double life – in the mornings he pleaded cases in court, whilst in the afternoons and at weekends he worked in the vineyards. With this tireless energy, he rebuilt the family vineyard plot by plot, after it had shrunk to a meagre three hectares following the phylloxera disaster and economic difficulties.

Today , the domaine is run by the ninth generation of the family , Etienne de Montille, who has worked alongside his father since 1983. The estate now once again comprises 20 hectares of vineyards, 15 hectares of which are Grands and Premiers Crus in the finest sites Burgundy – from Volnay and Pommard to Corton and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The transition to organic viticulture began in 1995, followed by a shift to biodynamic practicesin 2005 – a logical step that forges an even stronger link between the wines and their terroir.

In the cellar, Etienne favours whole bunches and gentle vinification with minimal intervention. The wines mature in a high proportion of used barriques, which lends them their unmistakable elegance and ageing potential. The most famous wine is the Volnay 1er Cru Champans, which perfectly embodies the essence of this appellation – refined, full-bodied and with enormous ageing potential.

The estate has remained in the family to this day and uniquely combines tradition with the foresight that characterised the pioneer Hubert de Montille decades ago. Domaine de Montille is more than just a vineyard – it is living proof that consistency and innovation can go hand in hand in Burgundy.
