Château Guiraud – A Premier Cru Classé with a pioneering spirit

Château Guiraud, situated in the heart of the Sauternes appellation, is one of Bordeaux’s most renowned Premier Cru Classés and boasts a history dating back to 1766. It was then that the Protestant merchant Pierre Guiraud acquired the estate, which, over the following eight decades and across three generations, grew to become one of the region’s most significant wine estates. In the official Bordeaux classification of 1855, Château Guiraud was classified as a Premier Cru Classé – a distinction that remains to this day. It is worth noting that, alongside its illustrious neighbour Château d’Yquem, the estate is the only Premier Cru Classé located within the commune of Sauternes itself.

Guiraud’s terroir covers 128 hectares, of which 85 hectares are dedicated to Sauternes production. The soils consist of 80 per cent sandy gravel and 20 per cent clay-rich gravel, underlain by deep layers of sand, pure gravel, red and white clays, and fossilised oyster beds. This geological diversity lends the wines their distinctive minerality and complexity.

Winemaking follows strict tradition: the grapes are harvested exclusively by hand and selected in several passes (‘tries’), with only perfectly botrytised berries being used. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, 90 per cent of which are new, and lasts three to six weeks, followed by 18 to 24 months’ ageing. The cuvée consists of 65 per cent Sémillon and 35 per cent Sauvignon Blanc – an unusually high proportion of Sauvignon for a Sauternes, which lends the wine its characteristic freshness and vibrancy.

Particularly noteworthy is the estate’s pioneering role in organic viticulture: The vineyard has been managed biodynamically since 1996, and in 2011 Château Guiraud became the first Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification to receive organic certification. Today, the estate is managed by Sandrine Garbay, who describes Guiraud’s style as “refreshingly balanced” – a modern Sauternes that seeks the perfect balance between sweetness and freshness.
