Château Lafleur-Pétrus Pomerol – A quiet legend

Château Lafleur-Pétrus (often referred to as Château La Fleur-Pétrus ) in the heart of the Pomerol appellation is one of the most prestigious, yet also most enigmatic, estates on the right bank of Bordeaux. The estate owes its name to its exceptional location: it lies directly between its two famous neighbours, Château Lafleur and Château Pétrus – a position that laid the foundations for its legendary reputation as far back as the 18th century.

The estate’s modern era began in 1950, when the legendary Jean-Pierre Moueix acquired the property as his very first purchase in Pomerol . Moueix, whose trading house would later also take over Château Pétrus, recognised the exceptional potential of this site at an early stage. In 1994, the estate was expanded through the purchase of vineyards from the neighbouring Château Le Gay. To this day, it is run by the Moueix family, who, with the utmost care and an unerring eye for quality, preserve the unique character of the wines.

The terroir of Château Lafleur-Pétrus is at the heart of its success. The 18.7-hectare vineyards are situated on the high plateau of Pomerol at an altitude of 33 to 38 metres . The soils are a fascinating blend of deep, ancient gravel and clay soils . Whilst the gravel-rich plots lend great elegance, the clay-rich areas give the wines their density, structure and velvety richness. The vineyard composition reflects the classic Pomerol tradition: 91 per cent Merlot, complemented by 6 per cent Cabernet Franc and 3 per cent Petit Verdot.

The wine undergoes careful vinification, with hand-picking and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, before ageing for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels – half of which are new barriques. The result is a wine of remarkable finesse and complexity. On the nose, it reveals a bouquet of ripe blackberries, plums and a hint of violets. On the palate, it captivates with its silky texture, finely integrated tannins and remarkable balance. Notes of cocoa bean, truffle and spices are often described, leading into a long, elegant finish. Connoisseurs particularly appreciate vintages such as the 1998 or 2000, which are regarded as masterpieces of recent decades. Château Lafleur-Pétrus thus remains the epitome of a classic, powerful yet elegant Pomerol of the very highest quality.
